Mid level shallow eng mic.

Im going to start capturing allot of reality type interview stuff and wanted to know what a good shallow gain mic would be. I dont want to use a shotgun because we will be shotting less than 3 ft away from the subject and dont want to pickup a bunch of back ground sound. I have an AT4073 right now, is there anything around that price that would work if it was boomed 3 ft away?

Nothing is wrong with the 4073 at all, I just think that is is TOO directional and sometimes we need something that is a little more spread out. More of a short fat pattern than a long skinny gain pattern.
