mics...

I've read the microphone post, but I did not find it to provide enough information on the specific advantages of each one. I've perused the web, and am having trouble finding good comparison sites.

That said, I just took on a job to go on the road with a band, documenting their tour. The footage will consist of downtime, talking in hotel rooms, in the bus, etc., but more importantly, of them playing inside the venues. I'll be needing to attach the mic to my DVX, so I was wondering if anybody had any input as to which type of mic I should look into for, most importantly, the high volume concert footage, but also the quiet, indoor scenarios.

Thanks a lot,
Matt

Do you want to use the actual audio recorded into the camera from the concert for the final product. I wouldn't suggest this if I were you as there are many pitfalls to this idea. First, if you will be moving around the stereo image will keep changing according to your relative proximity to the speakers. To go along with that, depending where you are, your signal will constantly change, if not peak the whole time.

Get a decent shotgun mic for the quiet stuff, and use a recording of the concert from the FOH board for performance audio.

Well, for a lot of the shows, I don't think recording the tracks directly from the board is an option, as the label didn't mention anything about that. Assuming that the clips will be very montage-y, some recorded tracks may just be used. for the live stuff that WILL be used though, is there a mic that's especially good for use in such high volume situations, with quiter capabilities?

Any dynamic mic will work for high volume stuff, but won't be the best for low volume stuff. It's a trade off you have to make, but I'm sure there is something out there for you, I just don't know what it is.
