mics for ambience?

hi guys, I have two mics.... at897 and a Shure SM-58 (standard vocal mic). I'm no audio expert. Which mic would be better for recording ambience/tone? Or should I just use the onboard stereo mic.

At897 will be superior to SM58... unless the environment is really LOUD... like races or cheering... then SM58 get's it. Often times the in-cam mic will do a pretty good job covering atmospheres...

Ideally I'd go with a quiet omni or cardioid... (or even a pair).
