Microsoft's Surface Computer

Yeah, but this goes waaaaay beyond a simple touch screen! I was blown away by the interface and the technology behind it. The next 5-10 years are gonna be purty wild! :)

Makes any version of Star Trek look like they're playing with cardboard boxes.

Which they more or less are, but now the illusion is even gone . . .

The idea looks very cool on paper, but my guess is that it will be implimented in the usual Microsoft way...

I can only imagine what "reduced functionality mode" would look like on a table-sized touchscreen... Not to mention the possibilites for DRM... imagine just setting your "wireless-equipped camera" on one of these things... I can easily see it downloading your media and crippling it with DRM, and then automatically deleting the originals... We might never be able to trust our tabletops again...

Perhaps that's a bit farfetched. But I'd be much more willing to accept a multimedia-focused device from a company with a better track record for respecting its customers.

The Surface Computer is currently a commercial device costing $5k-$10k. They predict within 3-5 years, the technology will trickle down so that it is affordable for consumers. I really think this is the direction computers will be going in - a real revolution like when GUI and the mouse came along.
