Microsoft Surface Studio looks like a nice monitor

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if it was made by apple. I own the surface pro 4 and I just can't stand Windows. It's so unreliable...
The pen? It's great when it works, as well as the touchscreen and the keyboard. Most of the times one of them just stops working and you need to restart the pc.

I can't understand why Apple refuses to make touchscreen monitors.

I can't understand why Apple refuses to make touchscreen monitors.

Because of ergonomics. A touchscreen monitor works well when used for short periods of time. Think museum displays, lobby kiosks, trade show displays and so forth. This was the core touch screen market for decades.

Mobile devices make sense to be touchscreen because the user can change the way they hold them to maximize comfort. Mobile devices are also more intimate and becomes a closer connection to the user.

Large touch screen monitors lead to a few ergonomic issues.

1. Gorilla Arm syndrome - This is what happens when gravity starts working against your arm. We can only hold out our arms for so long before they get tired and start to sag and hurt.
2. Severe trapezoid muscle, neck and back pain if you stare down at a flat touch screen device.

We are rapidly turning into hunch backs with the way to use touch screen devices and moving everything towards touch screen is not a very safe direction.

Apple realizes this and knows a desktop is a desktop for a reason and they factor in ergonomics and posture when they think about the use cases of a desktop computer. While the Surface Studio looks neat a touch screen of this size is just not very practical for 8+ hours of use per day.

Yeah if you're talking about video, then I can't imagine using a touch screen all day to cut clips b/c of the stress it'd put on your arms, but I'm not sure that's the idea behind it. I feel like touch screen is just a UI to navigate. But as used for tablet drawing I think there are serious advantages to touch screen, like rotating the page. The new cintiqs are definitely better for that, though, they upped it to 8000 levels of pressure sensitivity, 3840x2160 IPS, 94% adobe RGB, and they claim they fixed the parallax gap of the previous models, with a bunch of other upgrades. I think the Surface Studio would have been perfect as a stand alone monitor for me, w/out the computer. I don't know what to make of the dial in the Surface Studio promo videos, it's definitely a cool, innovative idea, kind of skirting around the idea of interactive augmented reality, but as to how useful it will be, I'm not sure. And I know people have strong opinions both ways about Apple products, but I was never interested in them. Not that I love Microsoft, either. But Apple has too many gotchas, too tightly controlled for me. Hopefully Microsoft fixed the issues you had with the Surface Pro 4.

All the buzz about this machine blows my mind. I think folks are just super hungry for iMac/MP updates. The specs on this thing are modest at best. It was a fun promo spot sure, but otherwise what's there to go crazy about? I don't want to touch my screen. My desk at home and at work would make touching it more than a few times a day downright frustrating. Better go to the gym I guess?

Call me confused I suppose.
