Microphone Shoot-Outs

Microphone shoot-outs should always be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

What may sound great on one mic. and bad on another, change the position slightly, or change the room and the result could well be the other way round.

That's why people tend to have mics. of different types and manufacturers in the kit.

So - a shoot-out may be a little help, but it will only tell you what is best for that particular session. A different day, a different acoustic and a different subject could give a totally different result.

Absolutely agreed. Take it all with two very large salt grains.

Just a fun excercise. But that is why I gave so many specifics as far as the set-up, and that is why I said "very un-scientific," and also "for those that are interested." I think shoot-outs can be helpful, but the real proof is when you hear that mike in your chain on a source that you want to record. YMMV.
