Microphone Questions

First of all, I'd like to tell all of you that I've learned a lot in the last couple of days about micorphones by going through a lot of the audio threads here. I value your opinions.

The questions I'm going to ask probably were already mentioned in these threads, but I'm confused on a few items:

1. For indoor use, it is suggested to use a hypercardoid micorphone instead of a shotgun mike...why? Can you use a hypercardoid mic (like the AKG w/CK93 capsule - I'm considering this mic) with a boom? How is the pick-ups for indoors? Could you use it outdoors also?

2. For a wireless mic set-up, I was thinking of the Sensheiser G2 100 series combo unit. For the plug-on transmitter, I was thinking of a Shure SM-58.

I plan on producing information/training videos and produce a few commercials for our cable company.

I already allocated $4k for the 100b/tripod/cases/extended warrenty/etc. I only have $1k available for the audio portion.

Would the mics I pickeds be an all-around good system to have? Any other suggestions? I want to make certain that these mics are a good starting point and can even be used as my audio equipment needs expand.

Thanks.

the akg is good for you because its expandable. but you must remember to buy windprotection of somekind (bbg for the ck93) and a shockmount. hypers do work outside, but not as well as shotguns. hypers can be used on a boom.

g2 rocks. dont use the sm58, rather get an re50, little more, but you're getting the right mic for that job - you wont have to replace again.

i guess its a decent setup all round, for a start up kit. ultimately you're going to want a good mixer, and to upgrade the lav that comes with the g2. you might also need a second g2.

if you havent thought of this, youll need a decent boom as well, and some good headphones. dont skimp on these two because if you buy well, they'll serve you for a LONG time.

Why use a dynamic mic?

No phantom power on the 100 series. The 500 series plug does. You could use a condenser that is self-powered with a battery.

How silly of me. I have the G2 100 series and have never tried out the SKP-100. Didn't stop to think about the lack of phantom power. I have a few SM-58's and 57's kicking around....guess I should try it out sometime when I come across a situation where a dynamic mic will work for video. All I really use them for are stage vocals for live venues.

You might also want to consider the Sennheiser MD46 stick mic. Metal body, works really well with the G2 100 plug on transmitter. A little long for my taste but the sound is better. If MD46 is 10, RE50 is 8.5 IMHO.

Indoors wise, the Sennheiser G2 kits are nice and functional. Outdoors, I had a real nightmare on one shoot. It was absolutely unuseable in some locations. If I knew this, I would never have bought two kits in the first place.

I have rented the Lectro 400 series with great results. Although it is almost 4x more expensive than the Senn EW112G2P, the new Lectro 401 at 1624.00 will be worth it.
But I know this is way out of your budget, just informing you when you go wireless.

This is 1271 w/o shipping

Oktava - 165
Rycote BBG - 125
Ktek 110CC - 196
ktek kssm shock - 98
Senn G2100ENG- 525
MD46 stick mic - 162

This is not a bad package to start off with.

I think Matt will concur.

Would the AKG CK93 use a different rycote and shockmount than the Oktava?

Would it be worth it to buy the Oktava over the AKG CK93 to save $200 even if you could find the extra money for the AKG?

That mic (AKG) will fit both 20mm Rycote BBG and KSSM shockmount just like the Oktava.

I have an Oktava and a Schoeps. Cheapest and most expensive. I dont know about the midrange stuff 4053a, ck63, etc. Im perfectly happy with the Oktava for anything non critical and harsh environments. Anything happens, ill just buy a new one.

Listen to both and decide.

ya reckon the md46 beats the new neodynium re50?

I wouldnt say it "beats" it, but rather I prefer the sound of the md46 better. I have the RE50, this was one of the first mics I bought because it is pretty much the industry standard for ENG use. A lot of crews use it. With a mic flag on and butt plug transmitter (very seldom use) it is way too short in length.

Maybe the RE50 is a 9.0 and MD46 10.0. Both are solid in terms of handling. I prefer the weight of the RE50 also/MD 46 is pretty heavy with butt plug and flag.

cool, thanks thats some good info. im looking at adding one of those mics to my gear for a sports show i have coming up, so guess ill make a choice. :) thanks
