MICrophone HELP!

I'm looking for a good shot gun mic with the lowest self noise possible for 200-300 bucks... The Rode NTG1 Is supposed to be good... but is it? What's better?

Have you run a search yet?

This question comes up all the time. So the simple answer, yeah, sure, for $200-$300 that is a nice microphone, you should be happy. You will also be happy with the AT897. Azden mics are also low noise, but sound like ****.

Run a search through the threads, this has been discussed a lot, but at the end of the day save your money and get a 4073a..

I have an NTG-1, and use it all the time as my primary on-camera mic. It produces full sound and is a good value for the money. The alternative (and a bit more expensive) is the Audio Technica AT897. It's gotten good reviews from members here and on other forums. I chose the NTG-1 over the 897 because I have a Rode NT-1A large diaphragm mic, and have been very pleased with its sound for voice over work; and felt the NTG-1 would be of similar caliber.

I had an A/B test a while ago of the 897 & Rode 2.
From my ears the differences between the two were that the Rode had a hotter output (by about 15%), a reach of about 6" longer with prime audio capture, and emphasized the low end. The 897 had a more natural tone. I thought as far as off axis rejection as well as rear rejection the 897 was the superior microphone as well.

Overall I actually prefered the tone of the Rode, although I would use an EQ with it to balance out the low frequencies.
