I hava a question. I have seen lots of pictures of this camera, and I am going to buy a DVX soon. I was wondering though, on the pics I have seen, there is a big mic on the handle already. Does this come with the camera already, or do I have to buy it seperate? I have seen the mic on pretty much every picture of the DVX, though I havent been able to actually see this camera in person (I dont think any camera stores in WA sell this camera, I have looked high and low.)

Hey Mehnkle!
Unfortunately that good looking mic does not come with the camera. However, the camera has very good built in mics. I think that mic you're thinking of costs around $200. You might as well spend a couple of hundred more and get a better mic.

The big mic in the picture. Does this come with the camera or not? If not, what is the name of it?

No it does not come with the camera, and even if it did, you wouldn't want it. Instead get a good sanheizer or Azden shotgun mic. While the built in mic on the camera is good for ambient sound, any kind of dialog will be missed with it.

wow I totally forgot about that one... I remember being so mad at Panasonic for not putting it in the box because every single photo had it with it, and not one said mic sold seperate.

Yeah I think I may have seen one picture without that mic on it. It's weird that none of the sites say it somewhere. How is the me66 mic? Do you just buy the mic, or do you have to buy any adaptors and stuff?

i have the OEM pana mic and it works well for me. respone is flat and no coloring of the sound.. which is the biggest positive for me..

The on-camera mic endures alot of flack that is doesn't sound good. I am an audio professional (I am a student but I do own some nice sound gear and have worked as a live mixer for stage events and a location recordist for video) and I think it sounds okay for a stereo mic and for effects pickup, it's actually pretty useful.

Considering that no production in their right mind would ever use a camera-mounted microphone for dialogue (video or film) and it is nearly always a good Schoeps MK-41 9 times out of ten (or the Sennheiser MKH-50 1 time out of 10) that is used for controlled envrionment (indoors) dialogue capture. That's pretty much the news. Quite a few movies are going all wireless lav's using Sanken's with Lectro boxes and getting scratch tracks for dialogue replacement later in studio. Jersey Girl is a good example of this. Television's Crossing Jordan uses the Sanken stuff exclusively.

I know this was a little off-topic, but for an on-camera mic, the DVX mic is really quite good -and- noone actually uses an on-camera mic for spoken word so this point is moot.

What's the best mic for action sports filming? I'm aiming to pick up the crisp and clear noise of skateboarders grinding handrails and landing tricks. So I don't think it wise to shell out hundreds of extra dollars for mics exclusively for dialogue and such. Any suggestions????.....

Directional microphone. aka: shotgun microphone.

Everybody makes them in various price ranges from $300 (Sennheiser ME-66) to $1500+ (Sennheiser MKH-60). Do a search for "shotgun shootout" to find recordings of many current models.

If you really want to go all out and money isn't an issue. . .
I think the Little Big Ears with a Sonotrim is pretty cool.

The microphone in the picture is called AG-MC100G and would be around $200US. It doesn't come with the camera, but make the ads look good, isn't it?

Mehnkle,

There are plenty of places to buy the DVX in Western Wa. There is a pretty good place in Redmond (MCSi) and an awesome place in Portland, OR (Professional Video & Tape). It's a bit of a drive but you will save on the shipping and they are really good at customer service. It's nice to have a place that can help you out if you have any issues and you can take it when it needs cleaning/servicing. Also, if you are using for non-professional purposes, Oregon has no sales tax and that will save you almost $300 bucks.
You can find some other places to buy directly by going to Panasonic's web site.
