MicroP2 questions answered?

For those like me who are lost in the strange P2, XQD, SxS... universe and who didn't understand what microP2 was, I found a lot of answers in this video: http://youtu.be/IPD3bZKnmiw
For those who are on the Nabshow, did you find a pricing on these news cards ? And last, is there a new AF100?
Thanks!

The AF100a was announced a while ago, wasn't a ground breaking update. Pretty much AF100 + 10bit HD-SDI & 1080p60 standard (maybe a couple other small things).

Thanks for posting the video, I don't speak french, I followed the into pretty well & it does cover a few of the big points of microP2.

Sorry, I made a mistake by sending the french version (witch is a lot easier for me to understand!), here is the english version:
http://youtu.be/L83Knfg1vmk =>I saw it exists in every langages, proof that Pana wants to convince a lot of people!
for the AF100A, I know but I regret that there is no AF200 with avc-intra/ultra recoding on microP2...*

I think a lot of people wish there was a AF200 & are dissapointed with Panasonic that there hasn't been more on the large sensor front. I think there is still competition from Canon, Sony & BMD, but m43 has some unique offerings that can be capitalized upon if the effort was there.

Thanks for posting the English version & welcome to DVXUser.

Wait. Hang on a second. Watch the video at 3min 34seconds

Guy says that the P2 to micro P2 adapter "can be used in an emergency can use SDHC or SDXC cards."

Does this mean that cameras that can record to Micro P2, can now also record to SDHC / SDXC cards too? If so, this is big. Was this announced & I just missed it? Or am I misunderstanding what he is saying?

MicroP2 cameras can use a regular SD card for AVC-LongG or AVCI-50, up to a maximum of 50 megabits. This was announced long ago, so yeah, you must have missed it.

Yes about the 4:2:2 and I asked a guy from Panny France if this allways will be 50mbps max. He told me "I guess no but we'll have to validate next UHSII cards, just to be sure that they really sustain de bitrate. But microP2 will always have RAID5/password and guarantee from us, that cannot offer other manufacturers with our camcorder".

AVC-LongG is 4:2:2 10bit, IIRC

But isn't AVC/LongG an AVC/Ultra codec? if so, only the newer cameras like the HPX600, 5000 and the new Varicam can use it.

Panasonic has advertised the 600 as the first camera that can be upgraded to Ultra. I don't think the HPX 370 or 250 can be upgraded to Ultra and/or LongG - or can they? Maybe Long G with its lower bitrate can be used in existing P2 cams? Is such an upgrade possible?

If not, that would mean the micro P2 cards would be limited to AVC/Intra 50 4:2:0 in existing P2 cameras (minus the 600, after upgrades). Unless, of course, you can record Intra 100 on the micro cards.

HVX200 can do 4:2:2 DVCProHD 720p30 (PN / Progressive Native) & that is 50mbps. So if you just need 4:2:2, it is there. Though I don't think you can do 1080 4:2:2 at 50mbps.

Also, AVCIntra 720pn30 would be better than DVCProHD, b/c DVCProHD isn't full raster (960x720 vs 1280x720).

This all being sad, does anyone know if the camera will just not let you set to 100mbps w/ a SDHC card, or it is just not recommended?

In the early days of EX1 / SDHC recording, you could put slow cards & the camera would record, or try to until the card crapped out or just gave you errors that you didn't discover until later. Once there was a firmware upgrade & SDHC cards got faster, I personally haven't had any problems.

I'm curious if you found fast enough SDHC / SDXC cards that can actually do 100mbps, if the cameras would allow you to. BlackMagic Design thinks that SDHC / SDXC cards are fast enough for their Pocket Camera / ProRes HQ 220mbps. So any card that can work in the Pocket Camera can easily handle any P2 100mbps codec.
