Micro 35 and DVX Side by Side Shoot

Taylor Moore,

I wonder what is with the slight wobble as the Micro35 image rack focuses? Do you see that too?

e

Yes, I am not 100% convinced of this either quite yet. It seems that if one uses such a device, then the WHOLE project has to be shot with it, unless sharpness is reduced in all NON-35 footage, to try and macth it.
Seems a bit harsh to get a good cam (DVX) and artificially reduce its sharpness afterwards. Of course, the final word on the G35 is still pending.

Definitely looks softer than the native lens -- but then again, so does the mini35.

The wobble is probably due to the lack of image stabilization, compounded by the longer focal length of the lens. Don't know what tripod they used, but I'd say you'd need a reasonably heavy-duty head to hold a DVX+Micro35+long focal length lens completely steady...

Wobble is probably the sticks, but also the spinning GG.

The spinning GG kind of feels like film weave.

Also when doing a rack focus, alot of operator/assitant vibration travels through the device during a rack.

My M2 arrived this morning. So far I just checked it for attachment to existing devices. I will be cleaning out the little particulates of crud that seems to be on the inside of the unit and then setting up for test shooting on Sunday.

hey craig... i really like the looks of your dvx setup... what kind of tripod/track system is that? Where can i get it an how much?? I'm anxious to see some test footage from the whole thing. Are you happy with the M2? What brand lens do you have on there?

Cody, the dolly is an Indie Dolly System set at the moment to narrow mode so the whole rig can run right through a narrow bathroom door. In full wide mode its almost as wide as the hallway. It is made to have professional tripods that have spike feet clip in and lock securely down. I have a Sachtler DV4 tripod with the base attached to the dolly and a Camcrane 200 with sections removed for shorter crane mode attached to the tripod. The head from the DV4 is mounted to the end of the crane for this occasion. When I'm not using the crane with the dolly I usually use my DV6 system for regular dolly work. I have a set of Canon FD lenses from my original F1 system and thats why I thought I'd get the M2 and see how good it worked.

I got the dolly with 21 feet of track for a couple grand, the Camcrane 200 was about $500, the DV4 system was $1100

I can't wait for Sunday to start the tests either!

LOL... I was wondering what he was going to hold up after the dog... a small pig, a monkey, siamese twin elephants...

Looks soft as hell.

I too am worried about how well this adapter will hold up, especially in a large format projection situation. While the split screen footage shows typical and shallow depth of field that one would expect from using a device such as this, the quality and size of the clip makes a comparison of resolution impossible.

I rented a mini 35 and primes for a project and while the ability to achieve really shallow DOF was fun, we ended up using it very sparingly and instead used the anamorphic adapter and cleaver composition (our output was 2.35 so the matted 1.33 from the adapter looked pretty poor compared to the anamorphic shots).

I would be very happy to just see a few uncompressed frames of something as simple as an open page of a typical newspaper so that I can judge the resolving capabilities.

I hate that it takes a picture that is already suffering to be sharp and detailed and makes it softer overall.

Bingo! I agree with that as well.
So far, I have found that cams that benefit from a 35mm adapter are the cams that are [perceived to be] VERY sharp to begin with, such as cheaper SONY's, like the DCR-PC100, DCR-PC120 range. There, a 35mm adapter can work wonders as it introduces grain and softens the image so as to make it overall MORE pleasing, and film-like. But still, image quality will be "okay" at best.
With a cam such as the DVX, the benefit of a 35mm adapter doesn't really outweigh its disadvantages, especially as we can already have a shallow[ish] DOF with a couple of little tricks.
The 35mm adapter that will work well with the DVX (and XL2, and HVX, and XL H1 will be an adapter that introduces virtually no softness. The G35 might deliver....time will tell...
