Mick's 2016 NAB Odyssey

Saw the Hive 1K earlier. Holy crap that's a powerful light! According to Robert (the CEO, I think) it's the equivalent of a 2.5K HMI, and it looked like it. It's a new bulb design, with a CRI of 98, and you can plug it into a wall socket without any issues. Also, and kick-ass, it's flicker free at ANY frame rate. The lights were actually on display at the Phantom booth (I think), so you know they're good for HFR shooting. Oh, and the new bulb is good for about 50,000 hours, which translates into 20 years in normal use (or something ridiculous like that). It's not cheap, but hey, the best stuff never is. I think they said it's going to be around $8,000 retail, but don't quote me on that.

I'd say it's the kind of light where if you know what it is and need what it can do, it's money very well spent.

thanks!! I have one of the 275W Par lights, Love it.. this looks killer

Ok thanks. The little ones look really cool. I was gonna get the Litepanels Calibers but these Aputure ones look just as good for less coin. That output tag doesn't mention the angle, must be 42 degrees. It looks like there's a vmount on the ballast in that pic.

The 120T ballast has AB or vmount

Hi Stephen, I just want to say that I truly appreciate your effort reporting this first hand info, hope you're having fun as well.

thanks, Craig

Ditto. Best reporting from the show that I've seen... truly. Thanks - I appreciate the small, powerful fresnels and the HIVE reports.

Glad you like it!!

Tomorrow's the last day, people, so if there's something you want to see, speak up now!

If there is any new interesting drone stuff that is outside the norm of DJI and Freefly, I would be interested. Only a smaller company stuff. Even drone-related gear.

Thanks for the great coverage Stephen Mick!

While scrolling this thread with my ham hands while at the dentist I accidentally down voted a post. Oops anyway to reverse this? Your light coverage is great.

If you get sometime on the final day I would love to hear your thoughts on the SoftPanel Kickstarter lights at the Veydra booth. They look very advanced colour wise. Thanks!

Those Aputure fresnels look fantastic! The only reason I'd lean towards the LEDGO D1200 is because I prefer daylight fixtures as I'm shooting with daylight most times.

Is the photometric data pictured for the bigger aputure led or the smaller one? it would seem to be equivalent to a 300W tungsten so I hope the smaller one.

Does Videostitch have a working Orah demo? What does the output look like?

I stopped by their booth today, and they did have a working demo. The output looked pretty damn good, considering the video was being sent to the cloud and back down. I think the guy there said there's about a 5ms lag, and it takes about 30s for the video to bounce to the cloud and back down. I don't know that much about this stuff, but what I saw looked pretty cool.

Thank you for checking this out. If you'll pm me your paypal I'll be happy to buy you your favorite beverage.

In reference to the Videostitch Orah,

I was looking for this too. They did have it working. I thought the resolution and the delay were a problem. Also, they don't seem to be looking at a very portable solution (contrary to their marketing video). Lastly, although it's not the biggest deal, their both design and presentation didn't have a lot going for it.

Bob
