I live about an hour n 45 min away from cebu where the famous dancing inmates are and I was wowed that MJ's choreographer Travis Payne and other dancers came here to the Philippines and go to Cebu island to choreograph the inmates. This is the video they made for sony entertainment which according to the news, will be part of the "this is it" dvd launch.

Though it is great choreography, I can't help but feel angry that they did this. What made the original stuff by them so great is that it was unique, surprising and wholly self made. This is just another example of a big corporation jumping on something that is "cool" and branding it for their own means...not that, that is something new.

Hi HuckLBerry,

I can understand your feeling to this, but for those guys inside the prison cells, the feeling of still being relevant to the outside is sometimes all that matters to them. The commercialization is non of their concerns as its what businessmen do, but you see, a lot of em really dreamt of seeing MJ in person when at the top of their youtube popularity rumors were rife that MJ would actually see them.
True or not, a lot of people living in the third world have nothing but dreams.
The visit of Travis Payne, especially during the Sinulog week which is the most important religious festival in the island made them feel special, for while the 2 million population of the island swells to more than double that during the festival, these inmates behind high walls would still feel marginalized and forgotten, thus when VIPs and visitors drop by to watch them, they feel relevant.
So even for that I give travis and the people or corporation behind him who thought of including them in the "this is it" dvd launch some credit.

The inmates could care less if they were used for product branding and such, besides they do perform a lot of other routines popular here in the islands that are not MJ songs.

FWIW it did control gang related violence inside the CPDRC.

cheers!
