Mic for indoors interviews

Hi, I've got the Sennheiser K6+ME66. It's a good mic but for my indoors interviews I don't like so much. I'm thinking in the ME 64, the cheapest solution for me but maybe I could buy another one and up a step. The 416 is too much but the AT 4073a could be a good solution (the audio distribuitor has counsel me the schoeps CMC 5 + MK 41 but it's too expensive for me).
Thanks ;)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

The schoeps is like a Rolls Royce. It's another category altoguether.

If you do those kinds of interviews frequently, have you considered a lavalier?

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

A good choice for an indoors interview mic is the AKG se300b with a ck93 hypercardioid capsule. It is a good sounding mic and is not that expensive.

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Thanks for the advices. ;) I like the sound's quality of good lavaliers but I don't like the philosophy of lavaliers. I prefer don't put anything on people who interview. :)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

I'll second Brett's suggestion.

The 300b/ck93 has been used in feature films... recent ones I know of include Pearl Harbor and Bad Boys II.

It's about a $380 combo so it's not too bad on price either.

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Thanks again. ;) Don't yoy think the me64 will be a good choice for dialogs interviews indoors or I should buy any mics you advice? :)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

brigadoon... I'm really sorry but I'm just not a fan of the me series from Sennheiser. Considering how much I LOVE their higher end mics I just don't get it with the me series. I had 'em for years and once I heard the competition's options in that price range I felt almost betrayed by Sennheiser. Don't they know how good the competition's mics are in that price range?

If you compare an AKG 300b/ck93 with an me64 you'll find that the AKG absolutely STOMPS the me64.

If it were me... and a couple years ago it WAS me... I would devest in the me line... not INvest in it... if nothing else just try something such as the AKG mentioned. Put it up against the me66 you still have... you won't believe the difference. Going with the me64 will give you a better pattern for interiors, but it'll still sound a lot like the me66.

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Thank's Matt. ;) I've asked prices for the AKG you mentioned here in Spain and it's a good price for me. Maybe will be my choice. The other posibility is the AT 4073a, it could be fine for indoors and outdoors both?. Or is better choice the akg for indoors and buy another for outdoors in a future?. I've the ME 66 until this time.
Thanks again. :)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Brigadoon... a hyper-cardioid is usually the preferred choice indoors. Everybody has their favorites, and that AKG is on a few tapers' lists.

I like the 4073a and it's a pretty good do it all mic that excells in "normal" shotgun situations i.e. outdoors, high-ceiling/non-echoey interiors, and even VO work... still, a hyper-cardioid is generally the PREFERRED mic for interiors... "preferred" means just that. There would be lots of times where the 4073a would do well for interiors, but MOST of the time a hyper would be better (to varying degrees of better).

About the only time I reach for a shotgun for an interior OVER a hyper is just when I feel like experimenting... but 4 times out of 5 the hyper is better. (That means that 1 time out of 5 a shotgun IS actually better... so I STILL do use one then.)

Obviously I'm a big fan of the 4073a because of it's price/performance ratio... but there are still some echoey interiors that sound better with a hyper. If you're satisfied with the outdoor performance of the me66 then I'd say to get the hyper and upgrade your me66 whenever you feel the need... next year or whatever. For all my me66 comments you should realize that there are still probably a half a million people out there who love their me66... I just wasn't one of them.

If I were in your shoes I'd have to ask myself what my proportion of interior/outdoor shots was... and then I'd base my decision on that. For me it's about 60/40... so I prioritized my interior mics first. If you're 40/60 then I'd go for the 4073a first... If you say 50/50 then I guess it's up to you... flip a coin. One thing's for sure... whether you get a nice hyper like the AKG or you upgrade to the 4073a, you will be very happy with the results.

I still think the 4073a is the best bang for the buck mic available for video... so no matter what that one is high on my VALUE list... but I've bought into the AKG line this year and I've been really happy with those mics... I'm very impressed with AKG! (I bought the ck63 hyper and ck69 shotgun... both of which attach to the 480b... if you had a higher budget or can get REALLY good prices on AKG then I'd actually suggest you considered the 480b/ck63... in the USA it was only about $150 more... and what you get for that $150 is really good off-axis pattern with a frequency independent drop-off... plus lower noise and more versatility in the supply module... but for NORMAL on-axis use the ck93 is a SWEET mic... I had a very hard time deciding... it could have gone either way really.)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Thanks MAtt. ;) It could be the best solution... and I could buy the shotgun CK69 for sustitute the ME66. The prices here in Spain are expensive: 146 euros+IVA (16%) for the AKG 300B, and 372 euros +IVA for the C480B, but if you say the improve will be noticeable I prefer wait a little and go for the C480B and the other capsules. :)

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

Brigadoon... I don't know what to tell you on the AKG deal. I honestly wanted the ck93 a lot... but it was the ck69 that made my decision to go the 480 route over the 300 route...

As I said previously... the 300/ck93 was put to use in SEVERAL $100million budget movies... it's not like you're settling for a mediocre mic if you choose the 300 route. In the states the total price difference was close to hundred bucks more to go 480... plus the ck69 was on my list already... but if you've got to pay more then double to go from 300b to 480b then I'd be tempted to just go with the 300/93...

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

I wouldn't buy a T-powered mic... either get the 4073a or wait for a P48 model. I keep telling you this, but you'll find out on your own anyway... the Oktava will be great for indoor interviews 85% of the time. I sincerely hope you're not buying the 4073a (or a used 416) ONLY for indoor interviews... for exteriors it's going to be a matter of preferrence between the 416 and 4073a, but both will do a great job.

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

but Matt, you were telling me earlier to buy the 4073a from the guy selling here... so why then are you saying now that I shouldnt buy it- or are you just saying I shouldnt buy it for interviews alone? I know that I obviously wont be able to get an amazing amazing perfect mic for every situation because I dont have the money, but I'm trying to get the best all around mic for what I need it for in all my situations. And interviews and weddings are the two main things.

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

the 4073 is a very good choice as one mike solution , it would give you very good sound extirer and more then normal inside ,
very good mike for the buck,
any how no mike would give you good sound when it sit on the camera if you not shooting from 2-3 feet , but this one can work extrimly well if you boom the situation ( you need a booman)
veadings are not any way different from regular documentary work or reality show ,with only the exswption you know what would happen very presisly , so good mike ,situation that you know the elimitetion , good booman its more then enouth to this kind of work .

Re: Mic for indoors interviews

kbar, I was saying that the 4073a that was on the marketplace page for $440 was an "extra" bargain... Whoever snatched that up should be really happy. I hope they post about it after they get it. (I STILL love the 4073a at $550 and I STILL think THAT'S a bargain too!... Realize that I'm using a lot of mics and I don't know of any 1 mic that I'd be 100% happy with so read on...)

Weren't you the one who said you had an Oktava "on the way"? The mic I said I wouldn't buy was the T-powered 416. It's about a hundred bucks cheaper then the P48 416, but I'd much rather have the phantom version.

What I meant when I said I hoped you weren't buying the 4073a for interior interviews is that if you ALREADY have an Oktava HYPER, then you 'aint gonna' beat that for your interiors... The 4073a will only be EQUAL to it OCCASIONALLY for interiors. What I meant is that if you ALREADY HAVE the Oktava and you think the 4073a is going to blow it away for INTERIORS then you'll be disappointed... for outdoors it's one of the best. You gave me the impression that you had the Oktava... sorry if we had a misunderstanding.

Everything Oleg just said is true.
