Mic for Documentary

Ok, Im doing a documentary about a band and have been filming on dvxs and xl2s. The audio off the onboard mic kinda sucks compared to the xl2 and want to know some mic recomendations for the dvx for use in filming a doc. Its mostly diologue right now but we are around stages and loud music fairly often. The xl2 seems to manage beautifuly with even auto levels on but the dvx just cant seem to keep up. Any ideas?
