Mic Distance from actors

Im using an Oktava MK012 for interior audio on a boom. What is the recomended distance from the speaking actor? Just a general distance to start with.

I've found this isn't quite true. With the camera I'm using you can't view the levels and I can't tell if the audio is clipping only by monitoring with headphones. I've found that one foot is generally a good rule for regular volume speech if you're not using a mixer of any sort.

Most hypers have an optimal range of one to two feet and short shotguns two to four feet. For me I'm using mostly MKH50 and MKH416 for boomed sound.
