Mic Choices on my budget

I'm gearing up to make a short film and my sound guy and I are looking for advice on our audio equipment. Our budget for microphones is $800.
There are very minimal dialogue scenes in the film, but they will be important. One is an outdoor scene and one is indoor.
We're looking for a really clear dialogue microphone.

Also, we're looking at field recorders. I've checked out the Zoom h4n , but what are other alternatives in the sub $1000 category?

As for recorders the h4n kind of has mixed reviews. But I dont mix much so I cant give you much insight as to other options.

Tons of info in here. This place is a gold mine. If you can think of it, it has been discussed before. Try doing a search and you will find lots of stuff for whatever your application be it indoors, outdoors, voice over, whatever, its all in here. Go for it.

I agree with gco for the various mic discussions but for reccorders I reccomend that you check out the Fostex Fr-2 Le and the Marantz_PMD661 Both are good choices.
