mic and syncing

Ok so I'm not asking about what mic to get, nor about how to get the best audio since I know those are all case scenarios as to how you want it to sound.

My question is: When you record on an external mic do you plug it straight into the camera or record it to a separate tape and sync it later?

If the former is true then how would you, lets say...record a scene long distance from the camera and still get audio like they were right there? Like if I wanted to get the shallow depth of field by keeping the camera far and zooming in.

Ok I want to submit to this thread by email and I dont know how to do it without adding another post :)

Not sure I understand exactly, but if the talent is far enough away from the camera that you can't notice their mouth movements, then just record the audio in closeup and get the wide shots to edit in over the closeups.

I always record to a standalone recorder (or PC/Mac) and keep the mic on the camera turned on. Then sync it in post production using Adobe Audition, but you can use whatever you have.
If you have more than one cam you can get them all recording in the same place with your mic and have someone clap or talk. Sync it all up then do all the switching in post.
God Bless

XLR cables are balanced and usually shielded. So as long as you treat them well, you can make quite a long run between the mic and camera.

If you're only recording voice, a decent set of wireless mics might also meet your needs.

Cheers,
