Metabones Speed Booster - Faster, Sharper, Wider lenses on APS-C and below...

I Don't post news often... but this is the first big node for me of the new year:

From the looks of it, even this beta image is very very promising. I think they need to work on coatings to deal with the slight reduction of contrast but so far...

This is pretty significant to me.

Changes a lot of things about APS-C... and will change MFT creative application in a great way.

REALLY looking forward to this on Blackmagic...

Wow, did we just witness progress in optics? Oh well, NASA did it for like 40-50 years ago, but still if this is as good as it sounds and looks then the BMC production queue just got significantly larger. ;)

+1

Definitely takes the mirror less realm to new places! GH3 just got better iso performance, and with no DR penalty too.

The most shocking thing about this is that nobody has done it before in this application. It seems like such a simple, obvious idea. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Metabones said a mft version is coming. Up until recently (ie. mirrorless) the flange distance was too long on APS-C for this to work.

Not a total win until it's out there and being used with all types of glass in all types of situations. What will it do in regards to flare etc.? What lenses can't be used, for instance. There's always a catch somewhere.

But it looks like a good start. Something to really look forward to.

Hehe, such a pessimist. I'd be more concerned about sensor reflections, especially with the FS100 which already has issues with reflections. My little NEX 5n just became a real player, full frame and all my lenses are a stop faster without changing the DOF. Now if only someone would get a codec hack working.

I want an FZ-to-PL mount version for my F3! It'd turn my 21mm T/2.9 CP.2 into a 15mm T/2.1! And my 85mm, 50mm, 35mm and 28mm T/2.1 CP.2s into 60mm, 35mm, 25mm and 20mm T/1.5 Superspeeds!

Yeaaaah I guess like they say, no free lunch. What of corner sharpness etc?

But I'm glad that someone tried it!

Was thinking this same thing.

I think there's a way to do it, though. If you do an E to MFT, I think you can then take the PL to E route and get the results you want. It's one of those mounts, it might be NEX mount to MFT.

I don't mind a bit of softness in the corners, who other than a pixel peeper is looking at the corners? If anyone notices soft corners you've got a really crap script.

I like that it reduces CA, I loath CA.

I wonder what it does in terms of breathing and parfocal zooming?

Hey Kholi can you activate my bmcuser account so I can annoy you some more  I registered last week.

I just got the Metabones EOS to NEX Mark II and it is fantastic. Such a solid product. The Mark I version was good, but Mark II was way better.

Now this? Metabones is quickly becoming the premiere adapter company. From what I understand, this new adapter works along side their original. If you want the longer reach, the original is still the go to. For me, I like to shoot with long lenses, so maybe I will stick with the original for a while. But it's nice to have the option of the "Full Frame" look.

The irony is that this tech makes Canon lenses more useful on short flange cameras and will not work on Canon's own cameras like the 7D, C300 or C100. Canon lenses now actually have more functions on their competitors cameras then their own. Twist of fate for sure.

This appears to be the DOF adapter for crop frame DSLRs.
I would expect to hear about the drawbacks of this solution, especially on the photography side (softening, reflections, halo, etc.).
There is no free lunch :)
