I realize that ProRes is "visually lossless", but I'm concerned about generation loss when exporting my final master Quicktime for my finished film. Here are my generations:
1) Shot in AVCHD
2) Transcoded to ProRes 422 for editing in FCP
3) Exported from FCP to ProRes 422 for color correction on Davinci Resolve 9
4) Exported from Davinci Resolve 9 to ProRes 422 for mastering, which yielded 3 reels (82-min film total)
Now I'm at the mastering stage where I'm compiling my final film – color-corrected reels, titles, and final mix – into my final Quicktime that I'll use for creating my HDCAM, DVDs, etc. So, I realize I may have already incurred a bit of generation loss, but is there any way to avoid this in the final export? In other words, is there any way to merge those three color-corrected reels into a single file without re-encoding? I don't believe FCP allows it to pass-through without re-encoding since it takes a bit of time to export this final sequence, however I acknowledge that it's possible (and I hope it's true) that I have not been experiencing any generation loss and it does actually pass through.
Thanks!
