I have a contact who is currently appearing on a reality show and will be getting him on as a guest on my podcast next week.
While talking to him I asked him if anyone approached him about t-shirts and other merchandising. He said no.
Anyhow, the show is on a major network and I would like to get with this guy and do his shirts etc. What I have in mind is designing some shirts using some of the catchy phrases he uses on the show. I will not be using the network name or the name of the show on anything as the network surely has rights to all merchandising using that. These phrases are not scripted, just spontaneous.
He's taking his contract to his lawyer to see if we can do this as it's something we can both make a little money with but figured I'd ask here to get a preliminary answer.
I figure on Discovery's Deadliest Catch, Discovery makes the merchandise and they hold all legal rights to the show name etc, but I imagine that the Time Bandit guys can make some Time Bandit shirts with no mention of the show name or Discovery's name and sell them all day long with no problems.
What do you guys think?
