I read on Videoguys.com that the ideal memory speed should be one half the front side bus speed. That sounds like it makes sense given that for top of the line processors, there are two front side bus speeds; 1066 Mhz and 1333 Mhz. That would neatly correspond to the available memory speeds of 533 Mhz and 667 Mhz. Put another way, it would seem to follow that a processor having a fsb speed of 1066 Mhz (such as the E6700 Core2duo) would require a memory having a clock speed 1/2 the value or 533 Mhz. What Videoguys says, seems to make sense.
However, if you try to configure a system at the Dell or HP websites, you can configure a processor having a 1066 Mhz fsb speed with a 667Mhz memory instead of a 533. (The Dell site used to give you an error message). At the HP site, if you configure a workstation, they dont even offer a 533 for a 1033 fsb processor. So is that the 667 will work with a processor having a 1066 fsb even though it is less than ideal and neither Dell nor HP care about optimal performance, or is this just not a critical performance issue?
I attempted to call Dell 3 days this week, but so far its been impossible to get a human being. They have a phone menu from hell and you cant send them an email if you dont have an order number. So any ideas on whether or not this is a critical performance issue would be apprecitated.
