Memory question...(gigs)

i currently have 1.5 Gigs for RAM on my G5..
i've been doing some experimental effects for a music video - motion blur/split screen/slow-mo stuff ...and the render times are killing me.

if i get another Gig or so will that really make a significant leap in render times????

Re: Memory question...(gigs)

What are your render times? Are you viewing it on an external monitor or just on your computer screen?

Try changing the settings of your playback to medium.

1.5 gigs is good... don't know if that really is your problem.

Re: Memory question...(gigs)

actually my playback is on low quality..
last nit i had one render for an hour or so..i went to bed so im not exactly sure how long it was.
these are 1 minute clips that i added motion blur, slowed the time down considerably, and had a split-screen going on(2 clips overlayed).
now that it is rendered i saved it as a QT movie then imported that back into my sequence so it didnt have to render every time...

oh and im watching it on my comp monitor..

i need real time!!

G4 dual 1.25 1gig ram -
Unlimited RT
Medium Quality

Two clips split - green line, no render
Stop motion blur (couldn't find a motion blur applied to BOTH) - Red line 3 minute render 1 minute clips

Re: Memory question...(gigs)

G4 dual 500MHz, 1G ram, 120GB HD + 80GB HD, my render times are decent enough that I posponed my G5 purchase plans till EOY... honestly it sounds you have some other issues rather than RAM. I'd look somewhere else if I were you. Good luck!

Cheers!

Re: Memory question...(gigs)

Are you editing in a DV sequence with DV sources, or anything higher in resolution? I've got a PowerBook G4 with half the RAM, and my render times are also significantly more tolerable (but they could be faster, sure).

If you really can't figure it out, or you just need tons of effects, you might want to explore OfflineRT as an alternative and edit on proxy video. You'll enjoy a noticeable decrease in render time at the expense of quality during editing. I wouldn't recommend playing with it if you're on a deadline, however.

In my experience, the G5s really take off with 2GB of RAM. Just make sure to match the chips!
