Memories

I'm shooting a short film that involves two sequences that are recalled memories triggered by sensory stimulation.

I'm trying to find a unique approach that broadcasts that what we're seeing is a memory of a particular character, not a flashback. I was thinking of shooting in a quasi first-person over the shoulder style. I like the feel of there being a bit of a disconnection, but I'm struggling with finding a way to shoot all of the sequences involved using this style.

Can anyone throw out the names of some movies that use this recalled memory convention so I can see how they present it?

Often in memories, things are not quite perfect. We remember things bigger or smaller than they were, louder/softer, etc. The first thing that stands out would maybe be using the production design to help sell the disconnect between the memory and reality.

If your hands are tied as far as that department and you need a purely cinematographic solution, how about using tilt-shift lenses? Not necessarily going very extreme but a subtle use of the effect might serve you well - focusing on the element of the memory that is associated with the sense or something like that.

"W" had some good use of tilt-shift lenses, but I can't seem to find the article that discussed it. I think it was late 2008 ICG.

Good luck.
