Meet Lily - The "Throw & Go" drone... that looks cute too.

Seriously... this is a great idea. I love the simplicity of it, and it is incredibly useful for a lot of basic stuff.
I can easily see this camera taking off in sales (pun intended)

Oh, notice how the drone is waterproof and can take off while in the water, and you can get a waterproof casing for the GPS tracker.

According to Lily makers this is priced at 520 dollars incl. shipping in the US if ordered in preorder.
They are hinting a final price point around 999 dollars.

And yeah, this tech is just getting more and more fun. I would love to have a carry drone following me home from the supermarket, carrying 10 pounds of goods :D

I wonder if you can control the drone while it is flying, since it follows you based on the tracking device you have to keep with you it means it will follow you blindly, no matter what objects it might come across, the video tells us even grandma can trow and go to get a shot of her and her grandchildren if she wanted, not sure how safe that is going to be.

I want to see video that hasn't been motion corrected in post...it seems like it will cover 90 percent of what people want to use a drone for.

It'd be cool if they made it switchable between auto and manual modes... I love the idea of having a little drone I could take on hikes or bike rides and grab some cool shots with no effort, but $1000 is a lot to spend on a drone that you can't really control. Even a little iPhone app or add-on manual controller would work.

Or alternately, DJI or 3DR should come out with a tracking device like this one comes with, so that we can use those drones in a more automated way.

WHOA!!! Thanks for posting!!! At that price, it's terribly tempting to pre-order. YIKES!!!
$519 until June 15, Shipping in Feb 2016. Long wait, but I don't see anything close to being this functional. WOWSER!!!

The promo vid is impressive, but when you step back, it's really for a more specific user type. unless they do make an app, it's ONLY a follow me drone. That, and no removable battery makes it all but useless for many working folks. Gaining waterproof is awesome though. i wish companies would consider middle grounds. for instance: waterproof all the circuit boards, so if it takes a dunk, all the non user replaceable stuff survives.

I'm 4 flights in on my phantom 3, loving it so far.

It says you have to fly in an open area, that it won't detect trees, over hanging stuff and people in its way. This is very cool and I would love to buy it, but curious to know if something breaks, how easy it will to find parts and fix it.

I think these are great points.

I do think that (as you point out "it's really for a more specific user type") I am that user.
I don't shoot professionally anymore. It's just fun stuff for my own artistic interest or stuff with friends and family.
The thought of getting a few seconds of ariel video to add to the mix with a VERY SHORT (hopefully nearly non-existent) learning curve sounds like a DREAM COME TRUE for me. (Especially for 500 bucks)

Obviously, there's a LOOOOONG way to go, and we'll see what happens....and sadly, I'll bet it's a YEAR before it's in my hands, but....I don't have any PRESSING needs or anything ....so.... I can wait, lol. Cheers Peeps!!! :)

I think that we are going to see more of these. They'll shrink to be pocket-sized and they will be the replacement for the "selfie" stick. I expect to see them to be buzzing around friends, families and couples at every landmark, monument, and significant viewpoint (can't say that I like this idea much). Your average video blogger will be using one of these instead of a tripod, and fluid camera movements will no longer be exclusive to video professionals.

I wonder how this will affect commercial licensing. For example, here in Australia if you are shooting commercially with drones, you must hold a UAV Pilots license. But is a license still necessary if you are not actually piloting it? And is there a loophole for producers who are routinely asked to prove that their pilot is licensed, if there is no pilot? With the advertised easy landings, producers can quite literally claim that their commercial aerial footage "just happened to fall out of the sky".

I'm not advocating cowboy production with this new toy (quite the opposite, I've stayed well away from drones - even refusing to use footage supplied to me by clients unless they have proof of a licensed operator - due to all the legal requirements) but there's some times when the rules are so ridiculously unnecessary and prohibitive, and it might take devices like this for the authorities to re-think their regulations (essentially right now you can fly the drone unlicensed - provided you follow the airspace and safety rules - and record footage too, but you cannot actually use the footage for a project or sell it unless you have the operators license.)

I don't think you want to fly one here in Minnesota during duck hunting season.

I am interested to see what GoPro will be bringing to the the table. I read they are going to get into the drone market.
But I love all the aspects of the Lily drone, just want to wait to see the reviews and video resolution before I buy.
I would be really nervous throwing this drone over a cliff or bridge and then letter it start itself. I can only imagine there would be people that would forget to hit the "on" button, and watch there expensive drone hit the rocks below.

if it just follows you but doesnt see whats in its way... whats to keep it from mowing over a flock of people that happens to get in its flight path to just follow you?

its cool but seems could be dangerous for people around it that don't low to stay away.

love the technology though but doesnt look like anything id be interested in.

They say we will be able to order parts. . . I am seriously thinking of pre-ordering.

Surely with a device like this there has to be not just a landing option (you would not want it to land on water or in a canyon you are flying over), so there must be a "return home" feature.

Talk about innovation! This is huge!

LOL... Re duck hunting..

Let's hope "hunting clubs" don't start putting the watches on ducks and replacing the camera with a mini-turret gun.

This would take gaming and game hunting to an entirely new level.

Whoa! Totally cool! I want one! I have absolutely no use for it, but I WANT ONE!!!:love4:

(I would be a real bummer if you threw it off a cliff, then remembered that you hadn't turned on the power switch. :crybaby: )
