I'm having trouble deciding whether to buy the ME66 or at897, and i think i'm going with the 897 for its outstanding audio vs. high priced me66. the other question: why does EVS charge so much for shipping it ground? i have one of these at school and they weigh like.. 2 pounds.

whats BETTER about the me66? what are its shortcomings?

Re: ME66 vs. arch-enemy AT-897

AT897

Pros- Great value for sub $300 shotgun.  Rounder, softer sound than ME66.

Cons- Much lower output than ME66.  Softer sound is at the expense of some vocal clarity.

ME-66

Pros- High sensitivity, very high voice clarity will cut through a muddy mix or poor sound system.  Interchangeable mic capsules add verasatility.  A proven commodity for ENG work and indie production.

Cons-  "Airy" sound signature lacks some richness and depth. Lobar pickup pattern prone to producing reverb in small reflective interiors.

if im tight on budget, will i notice the difference and will it make the extra 125$ worth it?

Since you have the AT897 at school--do you like it? If so, then there's no need to spring for the extra $125 for the ME66. Even at the same price, some folks would prefer the AT897--each mic has it's strengths, and neither is a clear winner. AT mics are a great value and tough to beat for the price.

I concur, if you already have something available that works effectively, there is little reason to spend any money to buy something slightly better. ;) Prolly better to work with what you've got. I can tell you most students don't have anything near as good as an AT897 available. Excellent mic... ;D
