ive been playin with my new me66 on the dvx and ive had a bunch of fuzz noise in the background- i listened to the samples that were on that webpage showing the difference between the me66 and the mkh416 and my sound from my me66 doesnt sound as clean as the clips sound for the me66. in both noisy and quiet situations.

what should my audio settings in the dvx be?

-50 or -60db? i had it on -50 db

Anything else any of you could think of?

Re: me66 sound problem

Your setting should be -50 db.

The -60 db setting in the DVX is only for running dynamics and very insensitive (weak) mics... a mic that's so weak to need the -60 db is almost always going to be a dynamic.

The me66 has a MUCH stronger tail, and more audible off-axis then the other shotguns in that price range. What that means is that mic setup is far more critical then you might expect. If you have a refridgerator or computer or ANYTHING else making noise the mic will probably hear it... Those sounds will be at a much reduced level then if they were directly on axis, but those unwanted sounds will still muddy up your soundtrack in such a way that the particular sound may not stand out, but rather subtly mix into the track so that it comes out as a not-so-clean track.

To get good results with ANY mic you should put on some headphones and walk around the room doing a sound check for best position. Normally a mic at a 45-60 degree angle pointing down at about 1/3 the length of the room... pointing down towards the 2/3 length will be the best position. Just pay attention to the acoustics behind the mic as well as in front of it and you should be fine.

Refridgerators, ceiling fans, A/C, computers, outside traffic, and anything else can inadvertantly hurt your soundtrack.

Re: me66 sound problem

In any case the sound will never be as clean unless your running through a mixer.. hopefully one with some pre amps and attinuation of -10db.. .but also be sure to toggle your high and low pass filters.. and depending always be within unity weather u are using a ppm or a vu mixer.

You can get a good mixer for about 1500 or maybe less.

Re: me66 sound problem

You never really realize how sonically polluted your world is until you put on a set of cans and listen to a Me-66. Damn those leaf-blowers!
