Can someone share experience or advice on when to use a bass roll-off switch. I know the purpose of the option but am afraid if it's on, the low side of the dialog will suffer.
My ME66 needs all the help it can get. I leave it off if possible. If the boom operator is not gentle or if the wind is pounding through, then I use it. I watch for any spikes on the meters. If it bothers me later, it gets removed in post. The K6 unit really starts to roll off too high. I haven't tested it (Senn. spec sheet only), looks to be 250-300 Hz. IMHO, that's too high. Try to use the roll off on a mixer for better results. My mixer has two settings 80 & 160. Much better and probably steeper filters. Of course, if using the mic only then.. no choice. I think you have it right, use it ONLY when you have to. If you're doing squeaky voices you might not miss it. If you're recording James Earl Jones, and had that roll off switch on, you'd have very little audio left. i.e. blank tape.
