ME-66 or MKH-416   Big difference or not???

I was wondering how much of a difference the mkh416 has over the me66 for a fixed interview type situation.

I just bought the me66 for weddings and interviews (looking for very good sound for the interviews more than anything). The me66 was $400 and the mkh416 was $1000. A bit out of my range, but still, I wanted to know if there was a big difference or not in an interview situation.???

thanks

The MKH is leaps and bounds better sounding than the ME66. They are both "good enough," and will get the job done well, but the sound of the 416 will stomp all over the ME66. You're kind of comparing apples and oranges here. The 416 is in a league of it's own... it's pretty much an industry standard for dialogue. For simple interviews the ME66 should fare quite well, but for critical dialogue, you probably want something a step or two higher.

Hmm... I can't remember whether or not you were in on some of the mic tests I did...

You can always get a much cheaper cardioid such as the AT3031 ($170 at B&H) or better still a hyper-cardioid such as the Oktava Mk012/Mc012 with hyper ($195 sound-room.com) and save the me66 for outdoor use. If you get one of those two mics and do a direct A/B comparo with the me66 you'll be amazed at how much better one of those will sound... especially indoors.

Well, what mic would you guys recommend if you wanted to get high quality sound for an interview. Forget about trying to get the cheapest one, but still keep it under atleast $1000.

What would you buy???

Do you guys think I should return my me66 and get a mkh416- for dialogue in interviews? I just bought the oktava mk012 with hypercardoid head and will see what that sounds like, but im still wondering if when it all comes down to it, nothing but a higher end mic like the mkh416 will do. If im going to spend 1000 dollars, how would you all advise I spend it for getting very good sound in an interview setting?

thanks,

Don't get too excited until you do your own little A/B test between the Oktava you bought and the me66. That will be most enlightening.

But if I wait for the Oktava to come, then I wont be able to return the me66- I got it from b&h and i think i only have one day left before i have to choose to return it or not- according to their return policy.

So simply put, which do you think will be best for an interview setup:

me66
mkh416
Oktava mc012 with hypercardoid head

or something else?????

Re: ME-66 or MKH-416   Big difference or not???

If you're asking me then you're asking the wrong guy. I don't like the me66. I owned one for 2 years and after hearing everything else that's available around that price range I'd NEVER have an me66 again. So I would send it back anyway.

There's a guy who had a mint 4073a on here for $440. I can't, for the LIFE of me, believe that nobody snatched it up. If it wasn't for the fact that I've bought about $2300 worth of shotguns in the last 3 months, I'd have been the one to get it.

For interior interviews where you're framed so that the mic can be within 2' of the speaker's mouth the Oktava hyper will do GREAT... the 416 may do just a little better or it may actually do a little worse, depending on the room and the particular voice... the operative word being "little".

The Oktava is FAR more natural sounding then the me66 ALWAYS... for ANY interior the Oktava is FAR superior to the me66 ALWAYS. That part's a no-brainer.

Ok, I've just called B&H and im returning the me66.

Now I need to know whats the best kind of all around shotgun mic I should get.

I'll be using it for weddings and for interviews.

As long as its under $600.

What do you all use?

How is that one compared to the AT835?

I am almost going for the mkh-416. I liked the sound of it. Very natural.

All the best

Fidel.

kbar... is that guy's At4073a still available for $440 over in the classifieds section? If so then GET THAT... make sure he's reputable and hopefully been posting for a while, etc. Just do "due dilligence" (meaning CYA) and if you can pick up a 4073a that's JUST LIKE NEW for $440 I'd say get it. Otherwise get a NEW one for $530... You may also want to consider another member on here who has a CS1 for $550... either one of those deals would make me really happy... EITHER ONE.

If neither of those is available then I'd tell B&H to charge you the extra $90 from your return and get the 4073a new...

I really wish you had the Oktava so that you'd hear what I mean... the 4073a will sound a lot like the Oktava... and comparing either to the me66 will make you glad you traded up.

You can usually find MKH-416's on ebay for around $700. I was patient and eventually got one for $500 with a Rycote softie included. I've shot stuff using both the ME-66 and 416 and the 416 is far superior.
