MBP 7200rpm vs 5400rpm?

I know this question has been debated before but I can't seem to find a definitive answer...

If I'm going to be using a MacBook Pro for FCS and all my media will be on an external FW drive, will I see any editing performance issues with the 5400rpm drive? I know I can upgrade to the 7200rpm drive, but with the 7200rpm drive I lose 20G of hard drive space, and I hate losing hard drive space...also, I've heard that the heat issues and whine issues are worse with the 7200rpm drives.

I haven't ordered the MBP yet, so I still have some time to make the right decision - any suggestions?

Personally I would only go with a 7200rpm drive and for the extra 20gigs you miss I would by an external firewire drive anyway if your going to be editing 100 or even 120 never seems like it is enough. But for what ever drive is the main drive on your machine I would always go as fast as you can get.

Thanks. Guess we'll go for the 100G 7200rpm.

If I have to give up part of the drive for a boot camp partition (my partner will be using the MBP for work using XP), how much would you suggest would allow me enough space to operate FCS seamlessly while still leaving enough space for XP, MS Office and one or 2 other small programs on the Windows partition? (I will always be using an external drive for my clips, I just want to give the programs enough space to do their thing.)

I also asked this question some time ago and was in doubt about it too. First I ordered the macbook pro 17 inch with 5400 rpm, but I had some good advice to get 7200 rpm and so I did that. In the end the conclusion was that a faster main drive is more important then 20 gig which is easily solved by using external hard drives. I had to wait 3 weeks more because it is not standard on the macbook, but I am convinced I made the good choice. Good luck!
