Mayday Film Contest #3

Hey guys, dunno if anyone knows this, but twice a year I run a 24-hour filmmaking contest called Mayday in L.A. Participants in the contest are given a title as a prompt and from there have 24 hours to deliver an 8-minute short film.

The next contest kicks off on November 5th, and I know quite a few of you guys are local, so let's see some more DVX's out there this time! Go to http://www.maydayfilms.com for more info, to watch some of the films from last time, and to register.

Any questions you have I'd be happy to answer.

That looks really cool but at fifty bucks to enter it will you screen my movie even if I take more than 24 hours?

Kinda vague (as in missing entirely) as to who you are, what connections you have for the winners etc.

Iffy for $50...

I guess senility is setting in....LOL

The idea sounds good, no problem, a good fun challenge, but there's just nothing on the site I could see with the "we are" details.

For a $50 entry fee, it seems to be kind of a must have to tell who you are, thats all.

These kind of contests are a good thing to have some fun with with a team especially...

I know Doug. I used to buy drugs from him all the time till he raise the price to $50 bucks an ounce. :) I had to pull back and go with Pookie's teletubie pills! The red ones are ill yo!

Isn't the average rate to those 24hr festivals $25 bucks? My friend are entering one in the Bay and they're only paying $25 bucks! They win I think $1000 bucks or something like that.

If the price we're lower they'd definitely have a lot more participants. Fifty is steep for a 24 hr festival.

Hmm, most of the ones we've seen were $85 or $100 or I think 48-hour FF is even something like $130. We based $50 on the minimum we need to even begin to cover the cost of screening and directly asking our participants what they'd be willing to pay. No one really batted an eye at $50 so we went for it. Make no mistake, though, after all is said and done we definitely LOSE money on this thing, every time. But I see your point about not knowing who "we" are. On the other hand, you don't have to pay now. We're accepting the first 17 paying teams.

Our prizes aren't huge (no $10,000 jackpots) but they are decent. But basically we do this because we want to, and because it's good networking, not because anyone's going to get rich off of it.

And to answer FilmTraxx, yeah, we'll still screen your movie even if it's late, but you won't be eligible to win awards. Of course that's assuming it's late and also reasonable. If you turn in a 30-minute film days late, we're not showing that. If you turn in a 10-minute film three hours late, sure.

Doug, it sounds like you're legit, but no one here knows that. People post these fests all the time, and there are definitely scams out there. With a little more info in an introduction you wouldn't come off like another spam scam.

And it helps to have some transparency when advertising on the internet because you don't want to come off like a ripoff artist.

Actually, I wouldn't mind entering even at 50 bucks! Too bad its in LA!

Hey Doug, I was joking about the drug stuff!

Hey guys... we ended up getting 15 teams, some really good movies, a lot of fun, and a fair amount of delirium. The screening's this Saturday, so anyone who's near LA, come on out and have a look! $3 at the door, free drinks, hurray!
