Maya for Pre-Vis? Or anything else?

So I can't draw to save my life. Literally. I mean, if someone tied me to a stake and told me they were going to light the biggest bonfire ever created right under my feet unless I drew a pretty picture, I'd end up fried chicken. Seriously.
I CAN sculpt and animate in Maya, however. I'm not Michelangelo or anything, but I can do it.
So...I'm looking to do previs on an action scene and am just starting to look into how I can do this. Storyboarding is out of the question (see above fire-related reason). It seems like using Maya to previs would be like driving a yacht around in circles in the pond in my backyard. It's just not designed for that. Anyone know any good alternatives?

Stick figures. That's what I do. It's barely possible to make out what my drawings are, so they're clearly labeled. For large productions I then pass those off to someone who can draw something recognizable to other people. I've tried using simple software but never really cared for it.

I saw storyboards once that were made by photographing children's toys. Action figures were used to show where the actors would be placed, etc.

Great suggestions. I'll be checking out Frameforge for sure. I remember seeing a doc on Spielberg using a viewfinder to find all his shots for one of the Indy movies on a giant scale model. I'd love to be able to do something like that. Sadly my modeling skills are worse than my drawing skills. But I do have mad nunchuck skills.
