Maya 7.0 on Vista/c2q

I am about to purchase a new mobo that will consist of either dual Core2duo's (xeon) or a single C2quad(xeon), adding another later on down the road. I will being installing maya 7.0, Vue 5.0i and all the usual suspects.
Now My question is that i really do not want to move to vista for another year or so, but ,does xp fully support these newer chips? Will maya/mentalray take full advantage of the cores? thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
 
I'm not sure if Maya has gone 64bit yet (if they have go down that route), if so try and get as much cores crammed in as possible and also as much ram as possible, I would stick with XP, the rule I always follow is stay one OS behind.
