Maximizing Preview performance

Hi all,
I have a brand new i7 920 with 12 GB ram with Vegas 9. I have 7GB dedicated to vegas for rendering.
Sometimes my preview window gets pretty choppy... are there tips to maximize performance?

For instance - does having multiple tracks effect performance even if they don't overlap? Is there a 'best' setting for my "Maximum number of rendering threads".

Any tips?

If they don't overlap there is no performance hit. However, if they do overlap, for SOME formats, it does have a hit with Vegas Pro 9. To remove the performance hit (if they overlap and if indeed you see a performance hit), right click on the event, properties, and change the Alpha to "none".

You have 8 threads with your i7 920, so set it up to use 8 threads. set your preview window to preview half. don't expect smooth frame rates once you start using plugins. use pre-render (shift + B) for smooth preview in the timeline.

Just curious - does Vegas just default to 16 threads, or does it evaluate your processor before determining this?
If so, then why would mine default to 16 rather than 8?
