Matthews Metal Scrim Discoloration

How old are they? Scrims cop a lot of heat and tend to do that, however the full singles / half singles and full doubles and half doubles are pretty easy to tell apart.

They are only 2 weeks old; not a very long time. Were this to happen after months or a year, I wouldn't be as disappointed. If I look closely at the wire mesh, I can tell them apart no problem.

My problems with this are:
1. I am usually in a rush and don't want to waste time figuring out which scrim is which.
2. Regardless if it affects the use, it shows the true quality of the product. Not something I want.

Hmm, I could always do that. Do you think if I returned the scrims and purchased another brand, such as Arri steel scrims, the same thing would happen? I just got off another shoot and the same thing is beginning to happen to my larger 6 5/8" scrims.

From memory those Colortran lights have the scrim holder very close to the light. Those scrims are also stainless, which does not hold paint very well without surface prep.

You could surface prep the rim, and repaint with hi-temp paint. You could also send them back.

FWIW I have scrims I purchased from production houses that went under, and while the rim color has faded, the sharpie writing on the rim is still there many many years later.

It is very close. But the holder is just as close with my 1k Mole (that uses the 6 5/8" scrims), though there is a lens between the globe and scrim. I don't want to go through the trouble of fighting with the manufacturer and having to send them back, so I'll go the sharpie route for now. If it doesn't hold up for the next couple months, I should still be able to send them back. Thanks for your insight, David!
