Matteboxes - Beating up the dead horse

Anyone else noticing the fact that the major Matteboxes made to fit the DV100 are made by companies that start with the letter C? I blame Sesame Street.

In any event this topic, of which mattebox is your personal pick, has been around for a while - even I, as a lowly newbie member of this vast knowledgebase, know that I probably wont find the answer to this question anytime soon. I've hit most of the major topics that relate to which mattebox offers the better look of the final product vs. which one will set us off crying when we receive our credit card statements.

Like most of you, I have been impressed by the perrdy pics up at http://www.saferseas.com/vsd/eye/sunshadesplash.html
However I know that I'm being lulled into making a rushed decision if i let my ego made the choice and accept the purchase. Looking at those images reminds me of a Dilbert strip where a software salesman comes in to push his new release that has no new features and probably slows down things considerably. To which Dilbert responds that he despises the guy's guts cause he knows exactly what he's trying to do but he'll take 4 copies for work and one for his home computer.

Not saying that its not useful to have a mattebox/sunshade - especially since most of my shooting will be done outdoors. But since I'm not earning a living with my shooting, not yet at least, I'm having a hard time justifiying to myself dropping close to $3000 if I go with the Chrosziel box + sideflags and follow focus.

I would also like to ask those that have successfully completed a DIY project, producing a complete mattebox and perhaps a focus follow system if they would be so kind as to share blueprints and or make recommendations as to what steps we can take in order to produce our own toys. Having access to a machine shop and trusting the guys in it I know i can approach them with anything and they can make it happen.

TIA,
John

Hi

You left out a good looking matte box made by Petroff. Has side flags, on rails, and new follow focus announced. Also they talk about a new insert to accomodate the anamorphic. I don't know their prices.

has anyone here used the Petroff? it looks great I agree but have yet to ever see it.

Only heard about it here a few times.  Never seen it any anywhere.

I've been researching them..apparently Petroff is releasing a DV Light weight support some time very soon.

Prices are as following:

4x4 (3 stage with top flag) - about $1900 CAD
4x4 (3 stage with top flag and side wings) - about $2200 CAD

Their 4x5 boxes are about $300 more for each flag configuration
2 stage boxes are about $300 less for each flag configuration

Light weight supports are about $450 CAD.

I'm really curious about the Petroff matteboxes as well. Last time I spoke with one of their dealers - I think the only dealer in the US for them - they didn't have anything for the Panasonic anamorphic, which is the reason why I didn't go with them. I've owned and worked with both Cavision and Chrosziel now but have always wondered about the Petroff units. Very rare to come by.

However, I just checked eBay and found two Petroff matteboxes for sale. Pictures aren't that great but perhaps someone could ask the sellers for more info? Here is the link to the first one, and the link to the second one.

John, if you don't need the anamorphic adapter, I'd go with the Cavision.

Re: Matteboxes - Beating up the dead horse

How did we all end up starting with the letter C? Very strange indeed. Aside from the obvious negative interpretations, it is probably too late to change our name to sinetactics. Please forgive us for lack of first letter creativity.
