Looking around to buy a Mattebox for my DVX but I don't like the Vocas version. Has anyone a another Mattebox and what is your experience with it? Like to know the experiences from the field with the different brands and models...
thx for the help :)

Find that it don't look like a real mattebox, for me are those things black... the Vocas looks more a consumer thing from Sony, but yeh thats only the looks... it's more the price of the thing. Don't find it worth to pay $800 only for a clipon & then you have again to spend $500 to get rods & all the flags... have seen cheaper systems like the hysonfilms & now the geardear and curious why are they much cheaper then the Vocas... for that some amount of money I can buy better a Petroff or a Crossziel... in fact they all just a filter holder with some flags and rods... thats all!

I agree, sometimes is it better to make your own tools then just buying one... many of these tools are very overpriced...

take for example the geardear.com mattebox, it's very modular and the price is very affordable... and it will does exactly the same then his big brothers with a pricetag of at least $1000 more... don't know or for the price of geardear.com I can DIY one by meself...

( gonna read the DIY section now :) thx )

i have found that you get exactly what you pay for in this industry. a cheap matte box is gonna have issues like maybe not fitting right, short life span ina rugged shooting environment and will break at the absolute worst time, but its cheap and you can afford it now. i spent the money on a chrosziel matte box, follow focus and support system. it has never caused me one bit of issue ever and it just feels pro. from the tightening sscrews to how the french flag moves, it does not feel like a toy. i could have made my own as well, ut for the amount of time it would take me to do it, i will stick to making skate board dollies that i can crank out in a few hours.
