mattebox - something for nothing

I have a most common problem: low budget and lots of wishes. :P Well, I have the DVX, that's the main thing but I need mattebox now. Encouraged and over-enthusiastic I'm making drawings and measurings for making mattebox myself but I ran into a problem I cannot get around. How to correctly calculate angles of the shader's flaps thus ensuring the best flare removal and preventing flaps from getting into view? Thanks for any kind of help on this!

Re: mattebox - something for nothing

There was a fellow here who built his own matte box which looked really nice. I'm not an matte box enginnier but what would be good is borrow someone or rent one and get the dimensions and measurments from an acutally model. You might be able to google maybe some specs on how to build one yourself. I honestly think you should just purchase one that make one. With the work and cost it might just not be worth it. my 1 cent.

I got the formatt matte box which is pretty cheap but does the job.

Re: mattebox - something for nothing

Search the archives for matthew's mattebox. He made a cardboard template that you could cut out and score and assemble for like nothing, and I think he was pretty pleased with the functionality of it. No provision for filters, but hey... you did ask for "something for nothing"... :)

Re: mattebox - something for nothing

Thanks Barry! It appears to be exactly what I need. But I cannot find it ???
I tried a dozen times, but no luck. Probably doing something wrong. I entered 'mattebox' in serch and entered 100 days for max time and 100 results but nothing...

That's one, but that's not the one I meant. I'm sure it was Matthew -- Matthew, you out there? Can you link to the plans?

The link from ellegrand, http://homebuiltstabilizers.com/tipsandtricks.html contains Matthew's Mattebox. It is the third link down, titled "Build a Matte Box for the DVX100 (...out of hard papper)".

The direct link for the article that describes how to build it is: http://www.desktopcreations.com.mt/dtc_shade/

Here are the direct links to the template files:
