What experience have you all had with the various mattebox systems out there. Anyone using the Cavision? Also what filter sets are you finding most useful?

Re: Mattebox options for 100A

Just rented the Petroff 4x5 this weekend and it was great...2 stages, flag and side wings came in handy with the .6 lens i was using...

Filters are so cheap to rent it's not really worth buying some of the more exotic kinds...I would own a set of ND's for sure (3,6,9). These will help you control your exposure and allow you too shoot more wide open without adding a colour tint to your picture.

Re: Mattebox options for 100A

I put all my strength together recently and bought the Chrosziel 4 x 4 mattebox together with the Follow Focus.

It is a finely machined piece of equipment and looks
as if it's made to last for a long time.

You find these little knurled knobs everywhere to lock
things (side wings etc.) also the movement of the filter holders is very smooth and precise.

Of course the price hurts, but I would doubt, that one
could make the same quality for much less.

i use the crozil clipon with cavision baseplate and rods , , much better desighn then the crozil and much cheaper , the problem with the cavision matbox is the qualaty of the mattbox,

have some grads , pola and white promists 1/8,1/4, more then enouth to shoot the kids

Re: Mattebox options for 100A

I'm using the 3X3 from Cavision and have no complaints; lightweight, durable, user friendly when taking on and off, no rods required, makes my DVX look sexy (yeah, I said said sexy. So what?)

The 4X4 witht he bowels is kind of beasty though.

Re: Mattebox options for 100A

Hi all,

I was wondering about the use of the 16:9 converter lens and matte boxes... Do I need to go to a 6x6 for this or will a 4x4 be big enough?

Also, anyone know where to buy a good mattebox in the UK?

Any advice would be apreciated.

Mattebox problems solved?

Mattebox problems solved?

I was at the NAB show and saw the Formatt matte box.  It is reasonably priced and is very flexible in terms of being able to use on most any camera.  The adapter plates are only about $30 each.   I think the entre set up is around $500 and has 2 filter  stages.   The filters load from the bottom so as to avoid any problems with camera mounted microphones or built in mircrophones like on the DVX100.

The the one rotatable filters does not completely rotate.  I think it only rotates about 1/3rd each way but I am not certain.

One downer for me is that it can only be used on lenses up to 93mm so it does not fit on my Century .7 lens.

Here is the link (copy and past or it will not bring you to the exact page, then just lick on the "Matte box" tab at the top)

To bad it will not fit the Century .7X and .6X lens for a 4x4 matte box because it look good product, the Cavision 4x4 will fit those two Century adapter lens though.
