Mattebox: Opinions

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

nice mattebox :) and nice website, how abouts a link to DVXuser on there fellow canadian? heh heh..

Anyways, depends how many stages (looks like 1) you have and how heavy the system is.. if you can get away with the clipon it should be fine, I have a 4x4 cavision that is pretty solid with the clipon system.

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Great idea, MDK, I'm working on something like this as well, on an even cheaper COKIN base. Looks nice and if you're ready to go I'll gladly drop my efforts to build something like this.

I think one filter stage is good enough and a "just clip it on" version is definitely nice because less expensive.

Two question for ya:
1. How much does it cost :-)
2. It uses 4x4 filters, right? Do you have vignetting with a single filter in it at any focal length?
3. Er... you're doing this for the lens WITH the anamorphic, right???
4. Why can't I count to two?

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Two replies, first to jarred. Hey buddy, where are you located? I'm in Montreal, moved here from Winnipeg. Also I will put a link this morning. Second, You can use one or two stages, 4x4, my second page of photos shows the box with two. As for the vignetting, with one there is none, with two, you can go down to 5mm. I also tried a cokin adaptation, but only with the "P" series filters, so they wouldn't work with the anamophic lens, that was a pretty good box as well. I'll be using plastics, ABS mostly, so I think i'll be able to build the box as a two stage clip on. Cost? Don't have one yet. Right now i'm costing things out and also trying to design something that is rugged enough for others to use and abuse. When I build something its usually for me, so I know where to be gentle with it, but if I do start building these things for others, then I want to make sure its sturdy all round, Eh!

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

mdk, another question. Your photos show the full rig with follow focus and support rods. Is anything of this made from less expensive or even selfmade parts? If so, could you elaborate on that a little?

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Everything you see, except for the FF, and rods, was hand made by me. Yeah thats it and the camera to, yeah I made it all, yeah, and umh, I even invented video, yeah thats the ticket. Joking aside, I purchased the rods which are the real thing, they were meant to go on an arri cam, but I snagged them from the guy who had'em. The rod support you see, I made that, as well as the mattebox. Good with my hands. 8) My new site is up and running, looks pretty much the same, but now there is an index for photos, and soon one for clips. There are no clips yet. Hey check out the new link. Later

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

..dude, seriously. ..everyone knows that i personally hand craft the dvx100 line in my living room with a pliers and sewing machine.. so stop trying to steal my thunda!! >:( oh yeah obviously I invented video too.. cause video rhymes with... shmideo.. and that means that if you drop the s..it hmideo which spelled backwards is oedimh.. duuuuh! its so obvious!!

:P

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Aaahhhhh.... so, that's where the link between DVX and oedimh comes from.

It's all starting to make sense now... ;)

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

The follow focus, if the question was for me, is a Cavision. Nice little unit.

Great pics MDK. To You or Jared: How much does the Cavision follow focus go for?

Phew, I wish I could. I'm still uncertain which way to go. The 4x4 (100mm) filter holders (Lee) seem to vignette a bit, the Cokin X-Pro is VERY big and might look silly on the DVX (there is an X-PRO modular bellows with filter holder for $185 at adorama.com). And guys like our guru Barry do not get tired to mention that Cokin filters are - more or less - crap.

Damned.
I'm only sure that I'm NOT going to "shave" off the fixed hood of the anamorphic.

Hey, mdk (or others), what do you think of the Lee WIDE-ANGLE lens hood instead of the standard Lee lens hood? Could this help to avoid vignetting or is it really that two 4x4 filters in general are two small for the anamorphic?? http://www.leefilters.com/CPTS4.asp?PageID=141

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Well, "there in lies the rub said jesus." As far as advising about different hoods, I can't say. I build my own. I've just finished a new box that snaps on to the lens, has 2 stages, no rotation, and doesn't appear to have any vignetting on my monitor. I agree with barry, in that cokin are no where near the same quality as good glass, tiffen, schneider etc, once you see good glass in front of your lens you'll understand why the pros use them. Good luck.

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Hey, MDK, really nice work; but couldn't you share a bit more details on WHAT parts you've used ;D there're no infos on your site (= I'm too dumb to find 'em)

I can't really identify the hood you're using. I guess its not selfmade from the ground up... You're using the latest Petroff? I've just had the chance to take a look at the vocas MKII, looks NICE too and is cheaper than the Petroff (Euro 580). [BTW: This forum can't display the Euro symbol: ?]

You guys conviced me to drop the Cokin line. Still, I am having an eye on the Lee wideangle filterholder with selfsupporting bellows. Costs 230$ with two 4x4 filter stages. Still a lot work to do to fit it to the anamorphic.

And then: 'k, Cokin plastics are shite, but what about Lee Resins? I just can't afford to buy 4 glass filters 150$ each...

Come on, mdk, give me some hints ::) pleez, pleez, pleez

Re: Mattebox: Opinions

Actually I did make the hood. The filter holders are 5mm metal, the follow focus is cavision, the rail support was made by me. I'm going to build these for sale, probably around the $500.00us area. They will have interchangeable back plates for the anamorphic lens and the regular lens. Rails will be an extra option.
