Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I noticed a little vignetting on the left corner of my new DVX-100A camera when I use the 72mm adaptor with a UV (or any other) filter.
Does anyone else have the same problem?
It has been suggested that I might have a misaligned lens because the vignetting is only on the left corner of the lense.
Any idea.
Thanks.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I know that some vignetting occurs with Matteboxes at wide open or with adapted lenses. What brand are you using?

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I can tell you that Crystal Optics stuff bought off ebay is usually some of the worst rubbish you'll ever encounter. I would not be surprised if there is a warp in either the glass or the frame itself that is causing the oddity.

Stay far away from those cheap lens attachments bought off ebay. You just spent $3500 for a beautifu Leica lens, but it only takes a cheap twenty buck filter to ruin it.

Hmmm...

Cant say Im absolutely sure. I highly doubt the PANI lens is to blame on this though.

Its possible the 72mm Adapters you have are not the right fit for the DVX. I see that they also advertise the same product for the Xl1? Also, at what point do they Vignette? IS at wide open and closed?

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

It vignette when it is wide open.
Greg, from cinetactic.com, sent me a new 72mm threaded adapter replacement today and it still does the same vignetting. I also tryed to mount it on a 6 months old DVX100 and it did the same vignetting. Of course there is no vignetting if i use the filter without the 72mm adaptor or viceversa.
I tryed to mount the filter before the 72mm adaptor and viceversa still vignetting only on the left side of the lens, WHY only on the left side?
Perhaps Iram_Zaidi is right when he says:

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I had the original 100 and used my Chrosziel 3x3 on it just fine. When I upgraded to the 100a I noticed vignetting on the left side of frame, just outside of tv safe. Abel cine looked at my gear and found that their 72mm to chrosziel adapter was slightly shorter than the one I had bought from ZGC and it fixed my problem. But all of that aside there is a difference between the centering of my original 100 and my new 100a. Don't think there is any thing you can do about it, that is probably just how it is made.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I have the same problem. I purchased the mattebox from Cinetactics as well as the 72 mm adapter. I have the problem in three corners not just one. Its frustrating. I am not sure how to fix this problem.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

is the vignetting from the adaptor ring? or from the matteblox shade?

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

My problem comes from just putting the 72 mm adapter on. The mattebox doesn't add to the problem. But at the same time the mattebox will not stay on if I don't use the adapter.

"A photograph or drawing whose edges gradually fade into the surrounding paper is called a vignette"

Okay being a newbie to the realm of videography and such maybe I'm not on the same page as the rest of you.

My problem. I put on the 72 mm adapter onto my camera so the mattebox will attach to it. I go into Final Cut and set up a "capture" and I notice (with no zoom at all) that three corners of the picture have a small black spot. Maybe there is another term other than vignetting. But is very frustrating because without using the adapter I will not be able to use the mattebox.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

if its only happening a little at z-o it should be completely gone after about z-5 . so if its only gettng into your full wide shots(which really shouldnt be used that often ..pending your environment) i wouldnt see it as too much of a set back, but still a pain.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

I just checked it and the black goes away at z-32 on my computer screen and out of the viewfinder at z-21. I suppose it isn't a huge problem. I am just wondering if I'm doing something wrong when I put the adapter on or something. strange.

thats not normal :)

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

Wait, IM lost.

Do you have the 72mm Adapater from "Crystal Optics" (as shown above on ebay) or from "Cinetactics?"

Are they one and the same? :o

Hey Jarred, which brand are you using?

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

Well I have the lense that came with the dvx (Tiffen 72mm CLEAR u.s.a)

I also have the Cinetactics 72 mm adapter.

If I take off the lense and put just the adapter on, the black marks will go away at z21.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

here is a link to the vignette framing as it show on FCP4:

http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/HomeP...yX0n9M.1/12.0.1.0.4.2.15.3.33.97.0.17.0.2.3.0

It is with-in the TV safe area but still annoying. It seems to disappear at Z20 (from my on camera LCD)
I did purchase the 72mm adaptor from www.cinetactic.com

Have anyone tryed a 4x4 glass filter on it?
I do not have any but I was planning to buy a couple of these filter. Since the vignetting it is caused by the thread-on filter perhaps it wont happen with a 4x4 glass filter??? Just a thought.

Re: Matteblox vignetting on left coner of lense

boy marco you are just cursed :)

Anyways, I have both rings from Cinetactics and I will post some stills of what your frame looks like with both rings at 0 zoom.

If you are only getting 1 or 2 corner vignetting, either your threads or adapter are not installed properly or not round, or your lens is out of alignment. IF you put on a UV filter and see any vignetting your camera is to blame, not the filter. There should be zero vignetting at zero zoom within 5mm off the threads.
