matte shot

Hey guys and gals,

I was wondering if there's any good tutorial on how to complete a matte shot using adobe premiere. If I wanted to create something like the statue of liberty jutting out of the ocean e.g. Planet of the Apes, how would I go about doing it? Any ideas?

This would be much easier to accomplish in AE than in PPro. If you insist trying, it would help to know which version you are running.

I'm using 1.5, although I do have AE as well. It'd be cool if we could go over both though. Thanks for your help man.

Sure :)

The last shot of the short I want to be of the horizon of ZUMA beach, with damaged skyscrapers jutting out from different sections of the sea's horizon/foreground. It'd be cool if the waves could actually slap the buildings, but I don't have any expectation that that would be possible.

P.S. Oh and yes, the shot would definately be locked down.

do you have a screen grab of the clip? or possibly an image of the buildings? It's possible someone might be able to make it for you and just send you the transparent PSD and you'll just have to insert it. I'd give it a try for you, assuming it's not too complicated.

I don't have the shot yet, and I don't have the buildings :(. I really just wanted to do a test to make sure that I could do it first. I'd be someone's SLAVE if they could help me get this figured out.

P.S. I also don't have the broken buildings. Anyone talented in photoshop? I have some painted broken buildings that someone may be able to use. I'll upload them to photobucket in a few hours.

UPDATE:

This is all I've got.

To help you out, can you at least post a storyboard sketch to make certain that we are understanding your vision of this shot?

From what I can read into your description, as long as you don't have motion tracking issues (moving portions of the foreground) all you will need is a PSD file with an alpha channel to place on a higher priority video line of your timeline. If you do have motion in your foreground plate, then you will need to have a mask that tracks the motion to keep your background object in its proper place.

Bingo.

The best that I could do is give you an exceprt from the script and maybe do a quick photoshop rendering of the shot. Again, no movement except for the waves in the ocean.

EXT. BEACH SAND PILE – DAY

The general takes a seat on a lump of sand. He plucks an oyster from the surface of the sopping-wet newspaper, cracks it open, and gazes upon the horizon--which is littered with damaged skyscrapers. Massive buildings sit motionless, jutting out of the angry sea.

P.S. Imagine the rectangles are relatively well photoshopped buildings.

you would need to get the water slapping the buildings... but that adds a whole other dimension to the word difficulty in this shot.

This would require motion tracking to not look fake. This is a job best handled in AE, not PPro.

Well I wouldn't HAVE to have that if it's too difficult... I suppose as long as you get the idea it's okay. How would I go about doing it if I wanted to though?

layer it. take your buildings into photoshop, erase everything that you dont want. create a .psd file and bring it into AE, place the buildlings where you want. -- there you go =)
