Matte Filters? Masks?

I want to do an effect that was used throughout the latest Jay Z "Show me what you got" Music Video. I am guessing I would need to put my video on say track 1 then use some sort of matte filter or mask to create slits or various shapes and grids to over lay over top of the video to get the same similiar look. Here is a link I got from youtube of the video. You see the effect used a lot towards the end but you also see it here and there throughout the video.

Today I tried to put a solid black matte on video track 2 but then I couldn't figure out how I would be able to cut out the shapes. A Garbage matte might work to cut the shapes out.

I am trying to have it look like there is one video clip playing across one grid of boxes then I wanted to try and place several different video clips in several different boxes like they do in the video as well.

If you go towards the end of the video you will see what I mean:

you could copy and paste the same clip for as many grids as you want to have then just crop each clip to your liking and you could even keyframe each clip or add filters to each one.For the differnt size boxes It looks like you could just do a multiple pip type effect with different size screens and then just alot of motion keyframing. I would probably nest a couple of sequences together to cut down on some of the keyframing.

I would go with lots of video tracks. Make each slice its own video track. Use the crop setting for each track to get the size of slice you need. Then use the necessary keyframes to move each slice in and out. When paused on a few of the frames I notice he's got more then one section of video in the various slice, its not one solid frame w/ black mattes covering up sections, there's a shot of the 'dance floor' in one slice and the shot of someone standing upright from a different camera angle in another slice. So use lots of video tracks, and use the crop and origin settings with keyframes to deal with the transitions and locations of the slices. At least on quick review of it that's what I would do. Don't have FCP here at home to do any tests though. Good luck.

cheers.

Actually I ended up doing just that. Its not perfect yet but it isnt bad. I still need to tweak it some more! Thanks for the advice.
