Should the lens of the DVX be right up (touching) to the matte box (no seperation) or is it okay for there to be some space in between? SinceI have the follow focus on as well, the matte box will only go back so far, leaving space in between.
It is best to have the mattebox flush up against the lens. Having a gap will allow light to enter the side of the lens (the whole reason why you have the mattebox on there in the first place. I might reccomend using some black gaffers tape to cover that gap. It looks bad, but it would give you a better image, especially if you are working outdoors.
On ours, the step up ring sits inside the mattebox about 3/8". Having all the focal train elements compressed against a rubberised donut or nested keeps out light leaks.
If you get light inside, you're bound to start seeing reflections in your filters. NDs and polarizers turn into nice mirrors when there's light behind them.
