I see DVXuser's sponsor offers a cheap matte-box solution for something like $170. (can't find the link now and I'm posting in between classes) How does that compare to a matte-box with a $1600 price tag?
I think you are referring to the Cinetatics Matteblox products (http://www.cinetactics.com). I have used their mb145a (for use with the LA-7200 anamorphic adapter) for a little over a year now and it is a decent product, especially for the price. The lack of a rotating filter stage can be a bit of a problem if you want to use a polarizer, but their filter holders do work for most other types. The down side to the Matteblox products is that their retention to the camera is less than ideal, but for the difference in price, you might want to give it some consideration. In my case I augmented it by adding a few small Velcro squares to the left and right edges of the anamorphic adapters lens shade.
www.cinetactics.com (you left out a c) You can't beat it for the price. You have to overcome a few things (rotating filters, 4x4's fit into a velcro sleeve) but for a savings of $1500 I'll deal.
Hey Hybrid, thanks for catching the typo in the URL.
If you are going to use the mb145a then you probably should use the 4 x 5.65 filters and holder(s). The 4 x 4 will be a little tight on the edges when the lens is full wide.
I made my own...... I use the anamorphic a lot and the standard lense.. Cost of mattboxes for both?.. almost as much as the camera. SO i made my own. Standard lense is great because of the screw in filters... no problem there. The Anamorphic needs a little work so i can use a polarizer in it, but the material I use is like a three layer sheet. Outer layer is like a plastic, centre layer is like a flexible.. very soft rubber and other layer is almost like a thick contact sheet. Its maybe 2ml thick all up. Also I made the matte boxes kind of large, from front to back the top and bottom shades are 9cms. Obviously they dont look like a prefessionally machined mattebox but personally I think they are better and more sturdy than the matteblox. Only trouble is they take up space cause of thier size....
Ill throw some pics up when my wife returns my little sony pc330
