Matte Box or Step Up Rings

I have previously planned on getting a mattebox for use with my 35mm adaptor and my XHA1. I would mainly use it with NDs, ND Grads, etc.

It occurs to me that if i get all 72mm screw-on filters, they will work on my A1, on my larger (72mm) zoom SLR lenses and, if I get a 58-72 step up, then I will have a comprehensive solution.

Keep in mind, I will be shooting mostly documentary, so the weight and complication of a mattebox seems worth avoiding.

I am open to any thoughts on this. Is there something I am overlooking but ditching my mattebox?

Thanks.

This is not a bad solution in my opinion. Most guys I know love the mattebox for its "Hollywood Appeal" many don't own filters.

For run and gun and One man only shotting. I find the mattebox a bit cumbersome and 4x4 filters are more expensive than threaded.

Grads dont offer as much flexibility as thread ons, but your approach is a very "pro attitude." Use what works for your application rather than make your A1 look like a Panavision.

I think the MAtteblox might work well for you? Also...

I would recomend getting an addition 72-77mm and buy 77mm step-up rings. Then the 52-77 and so forth. This is Nikons recommendation for sizes as now you can stack 77mm filters without vignetting.
77 is also Nikons largest diameters for what many consider their pro-lense. Case you ever buy one of those babies.
