You must buy the appropriate adaptor ring (72mm and ??mm for the XL2). It attaches straight to the lens.
I have been wanting to get me a Formatt Matte box for a few weeks. I've been watching this auction on eBay. He is in England. Since you're in Spain maybe it would be a better option for you, than for me. Take a look. It comes with ALL the adaptors and I'm sure it will go for cheaper than the link I gave you earlier.
I'm a proud onwer of the Formatt max box. For the price, its bad ass. Plus it makes your camera look very attractive. I got hundrends of phone numbers from women because of this matte box. yes, you are going to need a 72mm screw in adapter ring and thats it. ;D
If this type of matte box (Formatt 500) mounts directly to the lens, does this not put stress on the lens? Is it better to use the type that mounts on the rods?
I also have the Formatt FM-500. It's pretty light, so I don't think there's an issue with stress. However, given a choice, if you can afford a more elaborate system with rods--it's going to be more stable. The FM-500 has a little bit of an issue with the top filter door being blocked by the built-in microphone, so filters are more easily loaded from the bottom. Not a huge issue, but an annoyance. Overall, it's a good value for the price.
how important is a matte box?
can you get away without it and still make a good-looking movie?
i want to buy the DVX soon, but don't want to get carried away with a million accessories - adapters, rods, all t hat stuff. i just want to use it as is, if i can.
maybe get the formatt matte box down the road. it looks nice.
It's a nice accessory, but not essential. Start out with the basics and as you gain experience, you'll figure out what gear is important for you. Everyone's needs are different and you can always rent equipment that you don't need very often.
Actually, Barry_S what's the matte box for? I initially thought it was a framing assistant, then I thought it was to keep out glare from the sun & lights. But seeing the upper flag (which I've seen a million times) has now confused me. Thanx
It looks, based on the pictures, that the matte box clamps on, but to use with the DVX, you get the additional 72mm ring. Has any one just clamped it on to a 72mm filter that was screwed on to the front?
I've read that other people have bought the Cavision 72mm to 85mm step ring to get the clearance without vignetting.
I think it would suck to only be able to load grad filters from below, but most importantly have the filter hit the microphone and not be able to make the creative choices needed in adjusting grad filters up and down for each shot.
