Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

Ok, I haven't decide how to shoot my next short but after volunteering on an indie feature on an Arri SR2, I'm beginning to wonder about my DVX again ...

1) To get a good matte box - I'm thinking http://www.16x9inc.com/chrosziel/dvcine/dvx/411-53-PK/itemlist.shtml it says here that the anarmorphic lens shade will have to be modified to fit it ?? Is there any other matte box solutions to the DVX for shooting both 4X3 and 16X9 then ? I shoot primarily on 4X 3 on the DVX for weddings and occasionally tv.

2) Is it not worth the hassle then, and instead plonk down rental money for the PS technik mini 35 ( which I have not used b4 at all ?) and keep it in 4:3 ?

If the upcoming short is any good, the director intends to do a print of course.

Re: Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

Wesley, the 411-53PK will allow you to shoot in both 4:3 or 16:9. Click on this link here to see a photo of how this is accomplished on the 411-53PK. The matte box does not need modification, the Panasonic anamorphic adapter does. For 16:9, attach the adapter, attach the matte box, and you're good to go. For 4:3, remove the adapter, change plates on the matte box, and now you're set for regular shooting. Of course, you can also shoot squeezed or shoot with the XL2 for native 16:9 if you don't want to hassle with the anamorphic adapter. In any case, get Barry's book on the AG-DVX100(A) ;D.

Re: Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

In case you want to shoot with the anamorphic adapter at its wide end, you definitely need a modification of the anamorphic as you will otherwise have some serious vignetting in your frame.
This mod is accomplished by "shaving off" the front rim of the anamorphic. The mod is either a medium to advanced DIY job or you can get modified adapters from some Chrosziel mattebox suppliers.
By the way, even in 4:3, the Chrosziel mattebox slightly vignettes at full wide. This is not visible on the DVX LCD but you can see it in post and on a field monitor with underscan.

Re: Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

yes I understand I have to modify the anamorphic adaptor lens which I can't since I do not reside in the States, plus I'm not prepared to do that just yet, seeing I haven't plonked down $ for one either.

So there's going to be vignetting on whichever aspect ratio I shoot on the chroziel ?

Ouch !

Re: Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

i have the 411-53pk and the anamorphic lens. got it from rush and they did the lens mod.

i've said it a dozen times now, unless you are absolutely certain that you are going to film i wouldn't bother with the anamorphic lens.

i would probably still get a good matte box. i've really gotten into filters and in a lot of ways they are better than doing something in post.

i'm buying a second dvx and i'm stuck on what to do...

i am pretty sure i'll skip the anamorphic unless someone is selling one at a REALLY good price on here, but i definitely want another chrosziel matte box.

the big question, get the 411-53pk just in case i ever get another anamorphic? or just get the regular one and be happy with squeeze.

a while ago there was a killer deal on a non-anamorphic chrosziel and i just missed out on it.

So... anamorphic is really that painful ? I know the book is to help and all...

so no film transfer, no bother and go for a matte box ??

Any other people care to comment ?

Re: Matte box and the anamorphic adaptor ?

as i've posted a few times, i'm getting another dvx and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna go without the anamorphic this time.

still going to get a matte box, probably the regular chrosziel that doesn't fit the anamorphic.

i figure the slight resolution difference won't matter because i'm never going to goto film. its my own weird opinion but film is dead unless you've got someone else paying for it.

i will use the dvx with the anamorphic for close-ups in case the resolution is a factor and then use the second one for all the shots where having two cameras is a big plus!

i am thinking of waiting till the april nab show to see if a dvx-100b etc. type update is coming because i have a feeling they might just come out with a dvx with native 16x9 which would be worth waiting for. if no new model is announced i'll order my 2nd one right after.

i'm hoping to do a LOT of shorts and maybe even a feature once the weather clears.

i'm in mass. and the cold/snow make it no fun for shooting.
