Hi,
Besides shading lenses my main need for a matte box is for use with ND grads. I shoot photo also so have a 4x5.6 schneider vertical grad nd (the line goes across the short end of the filter)- this makes it so I can move the filter up and down depending on the horizon placement, etc. I noticed a lot of film/vid grads are a horizontal orientation and I've even seen 4x4 grad NDs. There are 4x4 matte boxes and 4x5.6 ones. Do I need the horizontal 4x5.6 filters to cover width for wide lenses on a 16x9 image? And if so, that means a vertical grad wouldn't be wide enough anyway. Is the idea with a 4x5.6 ND grad to just put it in and accept where it's horizon is and frame appropriately?
Anyway, I'm looking into getting a matte box. I'd prefer less expensive, but something that suits my needs is more important. What are my options for use with Grad filters and a variety of focal lengths?
Thanks!
