I thought it was pretty cool. He's one lucky mofo to be Joseph Kahn's protege. Now someone please explain how they did the motion effect? Roto? And to get that much smooth slowdown, would you have to shoot that at 60p?

It was posted a few weeks ago. Maybe that's why the responses are low. :)

But thanks for the links. I never watched it before, but I did this time.

The video is very slick. In the behind the scenes it looks like Kahn still has a tight grip on things. But that doesn't surprise me. I'm sure the suits demand that. Great job by Matt, he will have a huge career.

I assume the motion effect is just an in-camera thing. It's a frame rate ramp that can be preset in the on-board computer.

I think there was some discuss of whether the HVX could ramp frame rate since it's varible and it's thought that it won't do it.

I wonder about the alley shot when they are slow and the car's tail-lights are fast. It must be a green screen and then they combine the shots.

Cheers,
Chris

That video was very glossy. But I'll tell ya, besides the eye candy aspect, that video was lame.

I know this McDermitt kid is loved here, but this was not worth what I imagine the budget to be.

Granted it did look super glossy, but that is attainable to anyone with a budget.

I demand a little more these days. Something real, clever, witty...just something compelling. I've seen it before- in videos of all size budgets, but not on this one.

I feel we have fallen into a habbit of calling something good if it's shiny on the surface, even if there's none of the important stuff underneath.

On the same hand, wow, he's 19 and look at the oportunities he has created for himself. That's the really amazing thing here. Not the video.

Keep in mind that this is a Backstreet Boys video. As a director you may want your own personal vision to be edgy and out there and groundbreaking. But the Backstreet Boys pay the bill, they're your client, you give them what they want, and their fanbase isn't made up of filmmakers but prepubescent girls. The video is perfect for that audience.

It would be stupid to blow an opportunity and to come out with something totally left field and strange, especially when the music doesn't call for that. Also, Matt was shooting on the DVX about a year ago. That's a pretty big jump and I applaud him for being able to take what he did on his DVX music video and get a similar gig on a much bigger scale. Pretty brilliant that he pulled that off.

Yeah the video's glossy, but he definitely repeated some of his tricks from his DVX video. Despite the gloss I think the video has his signature all over it.

you can see a better quality version on his site so i thought his site was working i almost flipped. mattmcdermitt.com and click on the picture or http://mattmcdermitt.com/backstreetboysmattmcdermittcut.mov the effects look better for some reason?
like i said before it definately reeks of mcdermitts style... but nothing groundbreaking but you couldnt do something risky or too edgy on your first big job lol. its not a masterpiece its as good as most of videos on tv right now. in the behind the scenes he looked so young people mustv been like wtf. why did he dissapear from the planet

COSIGN 15 TIMES!!! Couldn't believe the amount of hate youngin was gettin around this place on some other threads. Cats don't realize him making it, helps us all. Didn't realize Kahn was passing the torch. Dayyyuuum, first Dave retires, now a DVX shooter get's verified in the 35mm world. Good shiiiznniiit. I'm interviewing Mr. X next week for a street dvd called BOSS UP DVD. Curious about his thoughts on digiHD and would he ever shoot HVX or Canon HD. Well maybe I'll post the interview or a link for cats who care.

Glossy.....isnt it the BackStreetBoys.....thats his client right? I think given the client Matt provided the right product. May not be my taste but I also dont watch TRL and buy the albums so they dont need to impress me. He is a talented young man hands down, his earlier work was in the same style from what I remember. Nothing super edgy or risky, clean work with a great eye and he will do very well in this format and genre.
